Google claims a lack of AI experts in USA

Google argues in a letter to the Department of Labor that it could lose tech talent if U.S. immigration policies don't improve.

“Schedule A should include artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, etc.”

- What is Schedule A?
This is a provision that simplifies the immigration process for workers in shortage occupations.

The following is the claim of Google’s external cooperation manager.

  1. Google employees (=foreign workers) often had to leave the United States during the PERM completion period and green card approval period.
  2. There is a global shortage of AI talent, but the United States is a difficult place to recruit talent from overseas.
  3. Therefore, there is a risk of missing out on the talent pool.”

In summary, major IT companies urge the U.S. government to include occupations that are in increasing demand in Schedule A.

What is PERM?
A procedure for a U.S. company to prove that it is difficult to find a foreign employee in the U.S. when applying for permanent residency.

Because this process takes time, the U.S. government pre-qualifies some occupations through Shedule A. Google hopes that 'Schedule A' will shorten the processing time by about a year, so jobs such as AI will be included in Schedule A quickly.

Currently, the price of Open AI is soaring, with annual salaries of up to $10 million paid to AI experts.
