Air Force One, which ferries U.S. President Donald Trump, is having new chillers installed in its belly at a whopping $24 million. The cost includes the cost of testing and certification by the Federal Aviation Administration.

Boeing was awarded a $23,657,671 contract to change two Air Force One refrigerators, in service for more than 25 years, in December.

Since the past few years, there has been an increase in the cold storage space in order to, “to support on-board personnel for an extended period of time, without having to restock while abroad,” said Ann Stefanek an Air Force spokesman.

“The old units were based on the technology at the time and designed for short-term food storage. Although serviced on a regular basis, reliability has decreased with failures increasing, especially in hot/humid environments. The units are unable to effectively support mission requirements for food storage.”

The new units offer more than 50 cubic feet of storage.

The process of changing the chillers will take place in San Antonio and take the engineers almost two years. At the moment, it is unclear if the Air Force has considered cheaper options for the Boeing VC-25.

Defense One was the first to report about this unique upgrade, saying, “the requirement for Air Force One is the ability to feed passengers and crew for weeks without resupplying. That means storing about 3,000 meals in massive refrigerators and freezers below the passenger cabinet.”

ABC News reports: “During international trips, chillers in the belly of Air Force One keep food for daily meals fresh. The crew never procures food overseas to serve on the plane as a safety precaution.”

During his presidential campaign, Trump mocked the plan for spending nearly $3.95 billion on getting the new Boeing 747-800 as a replacement for Air Force One.

He claimed to have purchased "Trump Force One" from Paul Allen saying, “It's bigger than Air Force One, which is a step down from this in every way. Rolls Royce engines, seats 43. Did you know it was featured on the Discovery Channel as the world's most luxurious jetliner.”

After winning the election, he said the country should not spend too much money on the aircraft as the, “costs are out of control.” But it was only a matter of days before he changed his opinion of Air Force One.

“Beautiful, a great plane,” Trump told reporters on board Air Force One after his first trip. “Terrific.”
