Us - a Review

I guess there might be slight spoilers but I'll try not to do anything drastic, like give away the ending, say.

I see he movie Us is a spiritual sequel to Invasion of the Body Snatchers, the 1979 version with Spock. That film was a prescient warning about technology and predicted the internet and cell phones and most importantly social networking but we ignored the warnings. The "snatchers" won at the end, unlike the original 1950's version of the movie

And they won a couple decades later in real life, too. Everyone became their "better" self at least superficially. And if not. there are people waiting to scream at you that you're not yet the new pod version of yourself. Do better. They are prepared once you've completed your penance to take you to your pod.

We're used to it now, mostly. If you're reading this, you're a pod person. But lurking just out of sight is a more savage, more unfiltered. less articulate, version of ourselves. And they're getting more powerful. This is Jordan Peele's warning in the new movie I think. Your nice little pod society is vulnerable.

The original Snatcher movies (and even other ones along the same lines like The Stepdford Wives) never really explored life from the perspective of society with these new versions of people, say a few generations later. How long could it be sustained? If we're not careful the savage, troll versions of ourselves will win.

I don't want to spoil the movie yet but it's a hopeful ending. It's also the kind of ending that makes you want to go back and watch it all over again. So check it out even if you're averse to horror films. The scariest part will a personal reckoning, perhaps, when you see yourself reflected. When you imagine your "worse" self.
