Whats the actual political divide?

To the extent that US political division has any remnants of substance and ideology left, rather than cultural concerns, personalities, and "vibes"... what's the actual divide?

Is it liberalism versus progressivism? Populism versus elitism? Nationalism versus globalism? Working class versus an alliance between the rich and poor? Embracing change or preserving tradition for their own sake? Diversity versus unity? Order versus chaos? People versus governments?

Like... if "us" versus "them" is built on something solid, what is the underlying base right now, exactly? What material are the cornerstones made out of?

It's really getting harder and harder for me to distinguish any meaningful differences on something like policy. There's slightly different... emphasis... on areas of overall agreement, I guess? I dunno... seems like nearly every actual difference I can find is either something one side flip flops on right after I find it or is just phrased differently or is in the same direction but different degree.

As someone whose primary interest is in policy, I've never been more frustrated. It's not just that the wrong policies are being pursued. It's that policy doesn't even seem to be discussed. Kamala might occasionally say something about abortion, but her opponent removed pro-life planks, opposes a national ban on both procedures and distribution of abortifacients, etc. so there ain't much difference. Trump can say a lot about immigration and trade, but it's all stuff Biden left in place, and instead of preaching the benefits of trade and immigration Kamala seems to be saying she agrees with Trump/Biden on those things. Both talk about inflation, but neither seem to understand it much less present any meaningful solutions. On most other issues? They don't even get brought up.
