Microwave Ovens A Convenience That Kills

Hello steemians welcome once again to my blog in this article we are going to be examining the consequences of using microwave oven to heat up our food. Mostly we are going to be looking at the health implication with regards to the quality of food we eat. We have had a lot of studies regarding the demerits of microwaves. In this article am going to try to minimize all the scientific jargon and give bullet point and I hope to be able to convince you after this to do away with your microwaves.

Over the past decade microwaves ovens seem to be an absolute necessity of this age as it is found in 90% homes in America and its use in developing countries like Nigeria is growing rapidly.

What Are Microwaves

Microwave ovens are appliance used in the kitchen to cook or reheat food by emitting microwaves. Microwaves are a form or type of electromagnetic radiation which are considered as low form of energy in the energy spectrum second to only radio waves. This wave is generated by Magnetron a component found within all microwave ovens. In other not to bother you with a lot of science just have behind your mind that the microwave produced within the microwave oven cause dielectric heating which bounces around the inside of the oven and is absorbed by whatever is placed in the oven. We should also note that heating in microwaves occur in the presence of water molecules, i.e if water is not present in the food substance heating would not occur. This is because water molecule within the food substance vibrate at high frequency creating friction within the food item which in turn heats up the food. Therefore, heating of the food item is proportional to the water molecule present that is why most food item is unevenly heated in microwave ovens. In the process of this molecular friction the structure of water molecules is vigorously deformed.

Effects of Microwaving on Food

Microwaving our food has so many disadvantages as it affects the food item in so many ways which I am going to elaborate below.
• Microwaving produces toxins and carcinogens (cancer causing agents) in nearly all type of food. Research at the university of California Lawrence laboratory concluded that microwaves produced heterocyclic aromatic amines and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Both are suspected carcinogens. When microwaving grains, the amino acids are converted to carcinogenic substances so also when we microwave proteins and plant food.
• Microwaving the food, we take in destroys the nutrients in the food. There is not much research on the effect of microwaving on food nutrients, but the handful of research done agree that it destroys or alter the nutritional value of food. In the journal of the science of food and agriculture 2003 it was shown that broccoli zapped in microwave with a little water lost up to 97 percent of its antioxidant benefits.
• Microwaved food leads to a negative impact on human physiology and the heart. Studies have shown that microwaving food leads to food degeneration. These degeneration cause changes in blood which in turn cause health issues like elevated cholesterol, decreased red blood cell level, decreased hemoglobin level which may initiate anemia.

Effects of Direct Exposure to Microwaves

When the body tissues are directly exposed to microwaves some violent deformation can occur leading to “microwave sickness” some of the symptoms include:
• Insomnia, night sweet and various sleep disturbance
• Swollen lymph node and weakened immune system
• Headache and dizziness
• Depression and irritability
• Appetite loss
• Eye problem
• Extreme thirst.

Way Forward

Now that we have seen the consequence of microwave am going to suggest a few tips on how you can manage your food item to avoid the use of microwaves.
• Plan: if it means taking your dinner or lunch like 2 or 3 hours from the freezer so it can defrost naturally before heating in a pot
• Consider eating more organic raw food
• A toaster oven makes a great faux-microwave for heating and warming of leftovers. All you need to do is to keep it at a range of 200 to 250-degree F and gently warm for 20-30 Mins.

I'm so amazed to see someone who can't live without microwave. I believe you must be taking precautions with the dangers associated with it as enunciated above.

There are a lot of other articles in circulation saying that the allegations against microwave ovens are not scientifically proven. I can't imagine not using my microwave
