Unschooling Blog, Vol. 45: Out Hiking + Burning things with a magnifying glass
Fire!
I’ve always been fascinated by magnifying glasses, since I was a kid. It’s really fun to look at things up close. Even more intriguing for me as a kid, though, was how you can start a fire with nothing more than the sunlight!
I’ve been telling my son about this for a while now, but as the weather has been very cloudy until just recently, we hadn’t yet had a chance to try it out.
Today before heading out for a hike, I came across our magnifying glass. We decided to go outside and start a couple tiny fires before heading up to the small mountain ridge by our house for a hike.
The Hike.
Unfortunately, we couldn't find any of the trailheads we suspected to be nearby. That was fine though, because we did find one tiny trail and had a nice walk on the small road traversing the ridge of the foothills.
My wife also managed to find some mountain veggies for snacking on later. I forget the name now, but the plant is pictured below, in her hand. She loves searching for this kind of thing.
Even though we were all tired today, and things didn’t go exactly as planned, it was still worth it to get outside and engage a bit with nature.
Looking forward to much more of this kind of thing as spring and summer unfold!

that's a fiddlehead, an immature fern and very tasty cooked up.
Yeah absolutely I think almost everyone has experienced making a fire with a magnifying glass. It was so much fun, I used to hang out with my little buddies and go to a local ground and burn the dry grass. Those were the times, miss those times so much. Anyways your have an adorable family. I'm guessing the veggies are fiddlehead ferns? Think they need to be pickled before consuming.

We did this most in our childhood that hold magnifying glass on some small sticks and then sun fall on sticks through magnifying glass and after sometime fire start.
