Scientific papers are also F R E E !

Perhaps the worst thing about science is that you will need a subscription fee when you try to read a paper. If the article is not open access, but you want to read it, pay money for the PDF file, send an email to the researcher or someone else for a paper, or a quote from a scholar like me It is necessary to put up with listening to interpretation covered by prejudice.

However, with the browser extension " Unpaywall " ( compatible with Chrome and Firefox), you can easily search for free version papers elsewhere. Although it is not exhaustive, it is becoming something that does not require a subscription fee by finding open access and preprint papers from the net.

This extension is very simple. After installation, a small key mark will be displayed on the right side of the screen when accessing the paper. When this key mark is gray, it means that Unpaywall could not find a free paper.

If the mark was green, it means that you can get free papers from the university's website or pre-print server (where you will publish your paper before review). If you click on the key mark as it is, you can access the page where you can read the free version.

Also, if it was gold, it means that the paper is open access.

Of course, this extension function does not illegally access papers. Unpywall is created by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and the nonprofit organization Impactstory funded by the American National Science Foundation. Some piracy publication sites like Sci - Hub also exist, but Unpaywall looks for free articles within the scope of copyright law.

On the FAQ page of Unpaywall, we insist that full text can be found in 50-85% of articles. However, as far as I use it, I could not find free articles at such a high rate. Except for openly accessible papers, I confirmed the articles I wrote based on my thesis in the past two months, and the key mark was green for 8 out of 25 (32%).

Recently, not only these functions but also publishers of scientific journals are devoting efforts to freeing thesis. There are open accessible scientific journals such as PLoS One and Peerj. Publishers of major journals such as Science and Nature also provide openly accessible journals such as Scientific Advances and Scientific Reports, respectively. Nature is more advanced, there is a function called SharedIt that you can freely attach a free version link of a paper to blogs and mails.

As the time has come when the information on newspapers can be obtained free of charge through the Internet, the papers gradually become free from the influence of the net.
