The Umbrella - A Self Defense Tool

Hi there. This post is a bit different from the usual math, stats and programming posts. I am going to feature the umbrella as a self-defense tool. The purpose of the post is to raise awareness of self-defense with an umbrella.

NOTE

This is one guy's guide. Use force, self-defense techniques at your own risk. Be aware of your local city's laws. Fighting and self-defense should be used as a last resort! I do not claim to be an expert even though I know a few things or so on self-defense.

Umbrella Techniques

The umbrella is commonly used for shielding the user from rain (or hail) from above. With some creativity, the umbrella can be used as a practical self defense tool. Umbrellas can be used for (counter) attacking and for defending.

Baton Umbrella With No Hook

The baton umbrella can be used as an extension to an arm. You can swing the umbrella and hit the target on the head or you can poke the target on the ribs or head. Do keep in mind the height of the target. If the target is too tall, aiming for the head may not be possible.

Umbrella With The Hook Handle

An umbrella with the hook handle allows for extra utility over the umbrella without a hook. The hook part of the umbrella can be used on the opponent's neck as shown in the picture below. A knee to the stomach area or to the groin can be added.

Umbrella Shield

In the stick form, the umbrella can be used as a block from attacks coming from above or the side such as a swinging bat or knife.

• Umbrellas should be encouraged for kids for protection from the rain and bullies.
• Those who are vulnerable can benefit from umbrella self-defense techniques.
• There is this thing called the Umbreakable Umbrella. It is expensive and I don't know the effectiveness of it as I have never used it.
• Umbrella self-defense techniques can also be combined with kicks to the groin. The end goal is to protect yourself and run away.
