My day Today Testing cashew nut

Hello friends

It's me again taking the initiative to tell you how my day went and want I learnt today.
Today was quite a busy day in The CASHEW warehouse. We had a prospective buyer from India and also received shipment of 20,000 Catheter bag.

In cashew business before any sales is made, the buyer we run various test on the cashew to before agreeing to buy.

The test includes the following

The Testing of nuts to get the nut counts, defective ratio, KOR and more follows a technical process.
KOR(kernel output ratio)
The various test was duly carried out, I will try to explain one test today that is the KOR. This is the the most important one.

The process

  1. Nut sampling: this process the buy uses the scooper xxxxx to take samples randomly from each lot after which it will be spread on the floor and properly mixed

  2. Sample weighing: Here the sample that was randomly selected will be weighed at 1kg (1000g). After weighing the nut will be counted to determine the total number of nut per Kg. The number will be written down.

  3. Opening the nut and classification: Each nut of each sample that was selected and counted will be cut through with the help of a specially designed scissors.

The classification

** Wholesome Kernels (100% accepted)**

50% Rejected Kernels (Premature and Spotted)

** 100% Rejected Kernels (Defective kernels)**

Three separate bowl is kept so that after cutting and identifying the nut you place them in their respective bowl.

Good kernels are removed from the shells with the help of the scooper (or the needle) preferably without removing the peel, measured and recorded.

Premature and Spotted kernels are removed from the shells. All these kernels
are 50% accepted or rejected kernels. Also measured and record.

Defective kernels like moldy, brown, moth-eaten, empty and stunted are weighed and record.

After obtaining the figures

The KOR calculations

Now let Good nut be - X
Premature and spotted be - Y
Standard factor = 0.176
X is 100% accepted while Y is 50% accepted that is you will divide Y by 2

Let's say
G nuts= 225
Spotted = 41

(225 + (41/2) 0.176
(225+20.5) 0.176
(245.5)0.176= 43.21

That's a fair result
But buyers prefer 45-53

So I basically learnt all that in a day did research and still doing research on other testing.
Thanks guy. That's pretty much how my day was. Exhausted

Sort:

I like cashew nuts. They are tasty. From your post, getting wholesome nuts isn't an easy task.

Me too I love cashew nuts!

I wish i could send you some..

Haha. You're sending me love and that's more than enough :)

Yea. There is a lot of work.

The health man bring cashew nuts when u r bk

This is nice and well detailed. I learnt a lot from this. But my question is, if this test is carried out on only one bag, does it mean the whole thing will be rejected just because of that single test? Or will it be carried out on other bags.

Its not on a bag.
We arranged in lots, each lot carries 341 bags.
From the 341bags we take nut sample from 50-80bags. Carry out the test use the result to generalized the lot.

You’re sharing cool stuff my friend @sirdeza!

Now it’s time to take the next challenge. May be record Dlive videos and share it with the world.

May be interview people work in there. Show them cashew farm video, etc

Was thinking of that. Will surly do that

Good work bro

Surprised at how complex the whole selection process is. In Venezuela we have street vendors who commercialize those delicious nuts at a lower scale. They have become so expensive now that it is a luxury to buy some. A real treat. It waters anyone's mouth to see all those piles and piles of nuts.
Great job you're doing.
