My First @Ulog Post... an Introduction!

Hello @ulog !

I found my Philippines paradise!

I always wanted to live on a tropical island. I’m not sure why but it could have all began while growing up watching the well-known American television series "Gilligan’s Island" which was a comedy about 7 people who took a small boat cruise out of California, becoming shipwrecked on a small deserted island in the Pacific. This show captured my imagination as a boy with all the beautiful beaches and the coconut trees, and the turquoise blue lagoons. It was every episode and re-run that Gilligan threw at me that drove my fascination with discovering and living in my own tropical paradise, wherever it may be. I knew early on that I needed to get one of those sailor caps that Gilligan wore.

After graduating high school, me and my best friend immediately migrated southward until we found our first palm tree, Orlando, Florida. It wasn’t long before I traveled further and found myself in Key West, where I discovered the famous “Cheeseburger in Paradise” culture of relaxation and peacefulness, all the while listening to Jimmy Buffet. Ah, the life in “Margaritaville” and the tropics. I quickly learned however, that without money and some form of sustenance, I was destined to return home to reality - the now even more dreaded snow-belt of North-central Illinois, where I just knew I would live the rest of my life growing up living between a bean field and a corn-stalk. I needed a plan and it wasn't long before I placed my bet...I would take my chances and join the U.S. Navy. At least I knew that is where I could start with the Gilligan hat!

After returning home to Illinois, it wasn't long until I was on the bus heading for Navy Boot Camp in Chicago. The Navy guaranteed me an assignment to “Weather Observing” school (Lakehurst N.J.) after boot camp and I was going to become an Aerographer! How prophetic this was, as I can remember during my late teen years, my father quite regularly accused me of walking around with my head in the clouds. And this was the result of my armed forces aptitude test??? Okay I thought, it was a good fit. Whether it was prophecy or irony, I was resigned to a career of watching the clouds AND getting paid to do it. It was more than a good fit, it was perfect! I can remember the strangest looks on my friends faces when I told them I was going to get paid for staring at the sky. And, It just kept getting better as my living-in-the-tropics destiny would have it - my first set of orders after graduating from "Weather" school took me to Guam, U.S.A., where "America’s Day Begins!" Not only was it lush and tropical, but It was also in the Domain of the Golden Dragon.

Guam - My alternate paradise!

Nice beaches, coral reefs, coconut trees, and the Asian fiesta. Many, many fiestas! Did I mention the tropics? I figured life couldn't get any better than that. Once I landed there (at the ripe old age of 19) I found myself working a great job all the while getting paid to live in paradise. Eight of the next twelve years found me living, working, or visiting somewhere between the 180th meridian and the Indian Ocean, mostly under the tropical sun. It seemed to always follow me…from Guam to the Philippines, Singapore and Hong Kong, to Diego Garcia, and back to the Philippines, where I met my match…and my Filipina bride (1984).

After returning to the mainland and working until we decided on an early retirement, we made the decision to sell everything and move to the Philippines, where we built our home in Samar. This was not an arduous decision. As a matter of fact, once we gave ourselves the green light, it didn't take me long to pack my complete wardrobe of shorts, t-shirts, and flip-flops and like a true sailor, I was ready to get underway on a moment’s notice. And... believe it or not, I still had my Gilligan hat!

After living in the Philippines for over 4 years, we decided to move to Guam. We now use our home in Samar as our "retreat" home and travel back and forth as we feel the need. These days we just enjoy life as we take living "One Day at a Time."

For anyone who may be interested, I've been publishing a blog Retired in Samar since 2012 about much of our living in paradise experiences. Now I am sharing my writings with the Steemit community. I also have a YouTube Channel, Retired in Samar and am always looking for new subscribers. And now, I can further share my "One Day at a Time" with @Ulog thanks to @surpassinggoogle !

Hi @retiredsamar !

  • I wanna get more contact of you to consult with you about Philippines..
  • I am looking for a retirement country in Asia .. I am a small entrepreneur who still in my early 40th living in Europe.. but in the last 3 years I ve been exploring some Asian countries .. Thailand, Vietnam, Malysia, few more neighboring ones... mostly stayed in thailand with my Thai girl back and forth between Europe and thailand many times.. decided to stay longer ne’er in thailand .. however, I ve founded it difficult to communicate in English outside the tourist areas.. which are good for short visits but not for long stays as it’s tourist prices lol
  • singapore is easy to communicate in English almost every where .. but it’s also expensive to live unless you have a job or nice business there.
  • I never been to Philippines, which I wanna give it a try for few visits to explore it . I heard that English is much and widely used in Philippines more than thailand. But I don’t know if this ease of language feature is tied only to tourist areas only or could be in cheap local areas which still good to enjoy living there..
  • so when I saw your post and I knew your story, I wanted to consult with you the reality about Philippines ( cost of living vs. reliable English level .. not only as a tourist but as retired person who maybe go complicated issues like starting business).
  • I tried to explore some business in thailand, but you have to pay tons of doubles of consultation fees for the few top companies who can speak professional English.. and even if started small business I ll be depending 99% of my girlfriend ( not a nice feeling) .. so I am wondering is it the same when it comes to Philippines ? Or one can easily find his way to live ( and maybe start a small business) without the the need to 24 hour interpreter or the professional elite.?
  • where to start exploring in Philippines? Which one can spend about 2-3 k USD max to “live” comfortably .. communicate easily ... and explore biz opportunities ?
  • I know it’s a long message .. but I wish you can advise... you can reply here or hit me an email on ( [email protected] )
    Thanks 🙏🏼

Will send email response. Thanks for all the questions! Follow me on Twitter for updates on Philippines!

You are wellcome sir.Interesting kind of post, keep it up.First picture was awesome. Thanks for sharing your moments with us.

Wow! I just got to say thanks for all the support and UV's. I think @ulog will be a great place to post!

It's nice to know that you and your wife decided to spend part of your retirement here. This is a beautiful country with lots of beautiful place to visit and explore.

I wanted to enlist in the US Navy too, but that goddamned volcano erupted and kicked you guys out, and sent you packing home. My dream back then was to get into naval aviation, and become a Tomcat driver or RIO. Or jump ship and join the Army and become a grunt.

But God had other plans for me. :)

I agree, there is much to be discovered in the Philippines. I don't think it was Pinatubo that kicked us out though... the current administration at the time had a little something to do with it. Did you join the Philippines Armed Forces instead?

Yeah, I know it was the current administration at the time, but it was Pinatubo that served the eviction notice. LOL!

And no, I did not enlist in the AFP as I had originally planned as my backup in case my USN enlistment didn't pan out. I got stricken with bovine tuberculosis after drinking fresh carabao's milk in my frequent trips to a friend's farm in Pampanga.

My illness kept me out of circulation for six months, and when I recovered, I didn't feel the same again. It took about another year again to regain the muscle mass I lost when I was sick.

And the thought of military service slowly fell out of favor, due to the prospect of employment in the animation industry here, where I eventually ended up. :)

Sorry to hear of your troubled past. Hope the road you chose is well paved and smooth going! Sounds like a fun and promising industry to be in these days. Best wishes!
