vULOG 139 - Making milk kefir at home

Here is a little video showing how I'm making my own milk kefir from grains I bought locally. To make milk kefir you first need some grains you can find from a local seller, you need milk and a container.

After the grains added to the milk, you only need to let it sit for 24 to 48 hours, no need for cooking or warming it up like with yogurt.

Milk kefir contains a lot of probiotics in higher diversity and count than the probiotics you can buy in the shops because the commercial products have to pasteurise the kefir which of course kills a lot of the living bacteria inside.

I watched the video without issues! What a miracle :)

So I finally got to see what a milk kefir consistency look like. It's a little "soupy" version of yogurt.

My son said why didn't he just pour it? I'm not sure that you can pour it because of the rounded edges of the bowl. And since most funnel is plastic, I doubt you'd use it. Unless there's a stainless steel funnel.

So you just use the kefir grains over and over? Cool! What do you do if you want to stop making kefir for a while?

hahaha DTube is getting better, it also helps that OneLoveDtube made available a server to pin (cache) IPFS videos.

Yes kefir is like drinkable yogurt.

Your son is right, I could pour it but I usually make a mess like that. Plastic is totally fine too, I just didn’t have a large funnel.

You just keep using the same grain over and over and the grains grow so you end up having more. If you stop making kefir for just few days or a week then put the grain in a container with milk in the fridge to slow them down. Else rinse them, dry them in a paper towel and freeze them. When you start over, you have to reactivate them by putting them in less milk for 24 hours and repeat two or three times.

So impressed. I've not tried the milk one, but I tried the water kefir and liked it. Just went to check on it then and it's full of mould and ants. Oops. It just turns so quickly I can't keep up with it when I'm busy working unfortunately. Great Dtube. I'm going to try it I think - can I use it with other milks though coz I hate cow's milk!

I know! I’m doing Kombucha too and used to do water kefir but making both three is too time consuming. Water kefir is really good and can sometimes go quite alcoholic which is fun too. If it’s mouldy then it’s good for the bin 😔

Milk kefir can be made with goat or sheep milk. Coconut milk is ok too but you need to revitalise the grains for 24 in animal milk every few days.

Thanks for the tutorial... I had kefir grains from a friend who brought it back from Macedonia but I never started the culture! And now it's gone. 😣.

Just wondering, you were saying you need to only use stainless steel utensils, you think I could use plastic?

Thanks

Hello. Sorry, I wasn’t precise enough in the video. I meant that if you use metal then only use stainless steel. Plastic is totally fine.

I also just killed my previous culture by leaving them in the fridge for two months... luckily I shared some grains with a friend several months ago and they have grown so he gave me back some

No worries, we can't think of every detail in every post! Thanks for the reply 😁. I was asking because we have a plastic one and if I don't have to buy another one, I like it that way.

I'm glad you got more grain from your friend.
