Linny’s Ulog#3 - Working Late + HR Cartoon-off #3
That’s me. In the office, working late last night. I was the last person there. It’s a rare occurrence.
My husband left work early and offered to pick up the children. He encouraged me to stay at work like so:
“You should work late, stay in the office and be productive. Not be at home, slacking off on steemit.”
🤣🤣🤣
He was right though. I was more productive.
Many of the consultants like myself choose to work from home, but my company would like us to come in regularly. I keep assuring my manager he’ll see me more. I swore a dodgey oath that I’d try to be in the office Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 9 AM - 4.30 PM (gotta pick up the children from care). I haven’t quite got there, but I’ll try to do better next week.
I’d actually started yesterday in a bad mood. I came in the office sending everyone major “Stay away from me” vibes. I got to my desk but then removed myself to a remote corner away from my team. That’s where I am in the picture, at a hot desk by the window. I decided I needed more sunlight to improve my mood. Time flew and before I knew it, the day had passed. During the course of the day, people came to subtly check on me. I must have had a pretty dark face, because my manager joked that he wasn’t sure he should talk to me, that he actually thought about sneaking up and tickling me. Huh? I guess that’s his way of telling me I’m being a misery guts.
In any case, I told him to go away because he has a tendency to try and solve my application issues for me. He used to do my job and he still struggles to let go. I did sweetened the request with the promise of coffee to make sure he knows there were no hard feelings.
I do have a wonderful manager. I feel like I’m letting him down considering the faith he put in hiring me late last year. I liked him on first meeting and he surprised me by outright offering me the job during the interview. His words went along the lines of:
“I think you’re great. You have the job if want it. It’s as official as I can make it until I get sign-off.”
If there was ever a way to win a candidate over, that would be it. 👍👍
He even offered me the opportunity to come back and check out the software I’d be working with before deciding. I declined, partially due to laziness, but also the software packages are all the same to me in my area of expertise. I choose people over the technology.
I appreciated his strong commitment to my application. The moment I received the offer, I withdrew from another job interview process that would have given me the opportunity to work with a more popular software package. My decision was double-sealed when I later spoke to HR lady of my current company. She said:
“Don’t work for them. Work for us. Siiiiiiiiiiiiign the contract.”
Then she started cackling like an evil witch over the phone.
I mentally checked the box ‘Great Company Culture’ and emailed her the signed contract.
I’ve not regretted my decision. @thekitchenfairy tagged me awhile back on a 7 day gratitude challenge. I’m unable to meet that challenge. But when everyone left work and it got peaceful in the office, I stared out the window of the darkening cityscape and reflected how grateful I was for my job, my manager, my team and my company.
I’ll always need an outlet for my writing and creative pursuits, but my career is the most important to me. It’s easy to forget this, to take for granted something that is very important to my overall growth, my confidence and the privileges it affords.

Hope the productive day helped clear the bad mood. Your company sounds awesome, any company that has HR cackling like a witch down the phone has got to be fun to work with XD
Yeah, the cackling was so funny. I told her at the time she totally sold the company for me. It’s hard to be in bad mood for too long at work. You get busy. :)

hahaha love the picture you drew.
Great to hear you work for a company that values their employees. It is not easy to find one like that. Oh, and your workplace isn't far from the cat cafe either.
You’re the first one to actually comment on the image in this post, so I was wondering if I missed the mark completely. Lol. I only decided to post it because it was an instant hit with hubby.
Yes, it’s great workplace. I didn’t mention here, but I spent a fair bit of time gossiping to a lady and her husband when everyone else had left. She sits next to me at my regular desk, and we’re very social. It made me realize that I was missing a lot working from home so much.
And I’m shocked you can pinpoint where I work from an image! 😂
I thought the image was funny. It was a playful touch to the story.
Never underestimate the powerful eyesight of supersoju lol. Actually there was one thing in the picture that gave away your location. Not exact location but the vicinity. I was contemplating whether I should have mentioned it. I didn't want to sound too stalkerish. 🙃
@linnyplant
Working late has become a habit for me too
It’s not a habit for me yet. Lol. Thanks for commenting. :)
Im a chicken, Linny! Id be dead scared thinking of ghost and whatnot if i was alone in an office building 😁
Isnt it happying when you are surrounded by those who appreciate you, makes you enjoy the workplace much😊
💕
Don’t talk of ghosts! I totally believe them, so next time I’ll be scared! My mum’s the worst. She always tells me public toilets are ‘dirty’ and that they’re notorious places for ghosts to hangout. I’d actually be more scared to go to the toilet than actually sit at my desk. Lol
It’s a happy place. One of the key criteria I had was that in working for a consulting firm, it had to NOT be a body shop.
Sorry 😅 I am always scared of ghost whenever I visit Indonesia, but never when I am in Canada, or Australia, or Europe, idk why, yet as soon as I land in any Asian countries, I would automatically get scared of darkness and ghosts 🤣 Asians are so superstitious 😁
Congratulations your a winner!
Thank you. You’re so adorable. ❤️
