Ulog#9:Revisiting Mactan Shrine in Celebration of 120th Philippine Independence

120th year of celebrating Philippine Independence

Hello steemian friends! In less than a month, after the coastal cleanup operation at Mactan Shrine coast, here we are again revisiting the most historic place of Lapu-Lapu City. This is where the famous "Battle of Matan" took place. Exactly nine days ago, together we Filipinos simultaneously celebrated our 120th year of Philippine Independence. Let history be told how foreign men were attracted to the beauty and wealth of this favored country Philippines

So as part of the celebration, ( last June 12 ) we teachers attended the flag raising at Mactan Shrine. Assembly time was as early as 6:00 - 6:30 o'clock a.m. Now if you love your self, I beg you please do not ever be late! Even for a minute. I tell you, the timekeeper is braver than Datu Lapu-Lapu! Just a mere look at her face, ( no hearing of her voice yet ... haha!) you will surely lose. So to be late was a big no! no!

A brief flashback of the "Battle of Mactan"

Datu Lapu-Lapu's Monument

Since I was so early, I was able to enjoy the beauty of the place with a lesser crowd. Do you want to know how brave Datu Lapu-Lapu was? I think just a mere look at his monument could describe how ready he was to face his enemies! You see, he was one of the first to resist foreign invaders in the famous "Battle of Mactan".

The coast of Mactan where the battle took place

When I was young, history said, Datu Lapu-Lapu was brave and courageous enough to have killed Magellan, a Spanish colonizer (if you had read Philippine history and had listened well to your teacher during your elementary, you should know about Magellan and his troops). Datu Lapu-Lapu's strong resistant was a clear manifestation that we Filipinos even long before are freedom loving people.

Just recently the President of this country recalls how brave this man was and wanted to include Datu Lapu-Lapu to be one of the national champions. Unfortunately, it wasn't that easy! Some historian said there was a dearth of information on his actual participation in the Battle of Mactan. Well, it's still debatable so let's just leave it to the expert, alright!

So let the celebration begins!

Amazingly! This year's celebration was different. After the thanksgiving mass was "dance interpretation" representing the various Filipino cultures. Here!

Then the meat of the activity, the raising of the flag in celebrating the 120th year of Philippine Independence!

It ended with a short talk from our very own city mayor.

Indeed, it was a great day... Steem on!
