We always wakeup each day with our routinary activities....work... home, back to work then home. Is there nothing more defining in life than these series of monotony?

As I head on out to my workplace which I am already ten minutes late, an irritation was clear in my face, which to add it up, all the cabs are already jammed and that made me wonder that I'll even become later. I was standing for a clear thirty seconds when a lone leaf fall on my head. Looking up to the shade of trees that I am under, I remembered a childish belief that I used to believe when I was younger.

The Leaf

Being raised in the province, trees used to be the fence that surrounds our native nipa house. There were guavas, caimitos, avocado, and coconut trees around. Hence, it's really unimaginable to be sweeping heaps of fallen leaves every morning which my grandma used to bid me to do and I am not so happy in doing. Yet there was one story that she told me which I believe until now. Which made me thankful that there are falling leaves...

Grandma was a retired elementary teacher, she used to let me read lots of her elementary books and often told me lots of stories too. Most of those are just invented ones I guess because she told me of a boy name Payless who loves to eat noodles. I just realized when I was already aged 10 that one of our noodled soup has a Payless brand name on it. 😅

One day while I was grumbling on the task of sweeping off the fallen leaves, I murmured quite loud, loud enough for her to hear when I asked myself, why are there leaves. "Oh, how I wish that there would be no more leaves. Why do we have leaves around?

With that, grandma just stared at me, her gay face which suprisingly has less wrinkles in her age of sixty eight became utterly serious. She motion for me without any word to sit beside her on the bamboo made chair under the mango tree. She told me, Don't you know that leaves that fall are fallen stars? Well, I was dumbfounded and just stared back. She further told me that leaves are meant to fall because it is a sign of something big. Of prosperity. A sign of luck. That is how she manipulated me in doing my everyday sweeping a hearty task that I have to look forward to. According to her, be glad and cheerful that you are sweeping a heap of fallen stars, because these stars are meant to bring you luck and fortune.

Since then, every time a leaf fall on me whenever I am sitting or standing under the shade of trees, the words of grandma comes reverberating to my ears.

Whether true or not, I'm just simply glad that there are fallen leaves around. Aside from the nostalgic feeling that it's bringing me for my lola and my hometown where trees used to be in abundance, I'm as well struck with the positive thought of what a fallen leaf might bring me on.

STARS. LUCK. PROSPERITY.

Not bad at all I thought, as I hastily rode on the next cab with only a seat for me to spare. I arrived in my workplace twenty minutes late yet I was amazingly smiling despite it. Ohhhh grandma, thank you for that story of the fallen leaf!😇
