WHAT OUR LEADERS TAUGHT US___ THE NUESA ELECTION STORY

in #ulog6 years ago (edited)

It is no longer a news that Nigeria's corruption is at its peak. President Buhari had made it his primary mission on ascending the position of the GCFR to reduce the level at which this disease spreads and probably cure the epidemic. corruption at all levels of the nation has become a pest that has eaten deep into the country and is gradually milking it dry as an epidemic or rather a viral disease.

The recent trend which most of us regard as a slogan is "#ChangeBeginsWithMe" had previously made the masses believed that truly we can make a difference, but how can we be so sure;our supposed leaders have always won elections through various electoral malpractices by using and negatively engaging young Nigerians who are the future of this great country . Party politics have become a major occupation for many jobless Nigerians as it has been proven a very lucrative occupation in Nigeria, paying negative financial benefits.

The recent inconclusive election of the Nigeria Union of Engineering Student Association (NUESA), Univeristy of Uyo chapter which ended on a bad note made the future clearer on the issue of corruption elimination in Nigeria. There is a saying in my dialect about a kid learning how to chew the cord by watching the mother goat chewing hers.

Most of the things we learn in life are the attribute of others emulation and it is not different from the Nigeria - NUESA story. Election is a means by which people concerned choose who they want as their leader to be, in a free and fair manner but the case is different as every contestant wants to win by all means.

The University of Uyo Engineering faculty has been an outstanding brand within and outside the four walls of the university. The faculty has been known to comprise of strong intellectual capable young men who are not afraid to speak out loud when there is a fault in the system which concerns the great Nigeria student.

It has been known and said by many that there are only two faculties in the university, faculty of engineering and others. yesterday the 19th of May was the scheduled presidential election in the faculty and students turned up in their numbers to vote for their individual candidate. They were three presidential candidates with different ideas on how to move the association forward and enrich the lives of the great engineering student.

At about 7am WAT yesterday students started trooping in to participate in the electioneering process. at about 12noon the polling center was filled with students who came to support their candidate and the environment became unconducive for students who don't like the weed aroma and overcrowding.

The voting process began at around 2 pm WAT due to some logistic challenges, with me being the first to cast my vote. More students were tripping in as there was little or no space to walk around. After about an hour and a half, I heard some disturbance inside, someone has been caught with about a 100 votes he wants to put into the ballot box. the santana security present couldn't address the issue, as some students took matters into their own hands.

A student dragged the ballot box outside to run away with it, others tried to stop him and what I saw next was a distress crowd with students running away from the scene; the ballot box has been destroyed. The election ended and it was decleared inconclusive by the electorial commision. I retired home joyfully disappointed knowing that the #ChangeBeginsWithMe is far away from being achieved.

Turly we are our father's blood and we have been raised this way. if we are to achieve total change every citizen will be ready to accept failure as part of life, embrace the spirit of sportsmanship, unlearn what our leaders had taught us, relearn what is right and be contented with the little we have. Nigeria is a great nation with many potentials and a great prospect. if we work together as one we can achieve the great impossible.
