Jeremy Corbyn turned up unexpectedly at a Libertines concert at Tranmere Rovers stadium yesterday, buoyant after hearing that his Labour Party jumped 8 points in the polls to their highest approval ratings in a over a year.

Four poll results released yesterday gave Theresa May’s Conservatives a 9 to 14 point lead.

The shift in the polls is mainly down to widespread disapproval at the Tories’ social care restructuring that was announced in their manifesto. The policy says elderly people needing care at home would have to meet the costs but could keep £100,000 after the bill is deducted from their estate.

There were ominous rumblings for Mrs May in the right-wing press. The Sun asked on Friday: “Good deal or an Alz tax?” The Daily Mail reported a “backlash as social care shake-up is branded a dementia tax”. Conservative Think Tank the Bow Group said the plan amounted to an inheritance tax of 100 per cent on a £100,000 threshold for anyone needing complex care. He said the “anger will be horrendous” in Tory-dominated areas.
