Ugly Fruit Project

Did you know that according to FAO a third of the food production never comes to be consumed? Did you know that one of the reasons for this is that fruits are not attractive enough for the consumer to buy them?

I live in Chile, a country whose economy is based in exporting raw material, such as copper, fruits, fish and so on. In this post I will focus on fruits and vegetables.

In 2017, Chile exported 2.7 millions of tons of fresh fruits. This number represents the 27% of the total exportations, only surpassed by mining.

Since it is a major income for Chile, agricultors and bussinesmen has come up with a categorization of fruits. Amongst chilean people is widely known that "first selection fruit" is the one that gets shipped away to all over the world. The curious thing about it, is that this kind of fruit is not selected by it nutritional value, is just selected for the way it looks.

So, some fruits get discarted for exportation but can stay here and get selled in fresh markets, which is good. But some of them are simply discarted, as if the way they look could change their nutritional value or taste.

Therefore, with all of this in my mind, me and @experimentel decided to carry out this photographic project.

We decided to buy in fresh markets and look for unique fruits and take pictures of them to show how beautiful they can be. And also, rate them by how tasty they were when we finally get to eat them.

We invite you to comment below funny names for the fruits and vegetables we will be posting, because as you will see they don't have a common shape or colors. Also, if you find yourself “ugly” fruits or vegetables, feel free to post using #uglyfruitproject so we can share our edible treasures.

Hope you like it :)
