The Bujagali falls scene; A huge miss for this current generation.

in #uganda6 years ago

In 2005 I visited River Nile for the first time as we toured Jinja as a family, and of all the features I visited, Bujagali falls caught my eye the most. The scene of the raging falls was terrific for me as I got overwhelmed with excitement at the movement of the water. This is something I had over the years studied about at school but had never got to experience. The sight and sound of the water hitting rocks was spectacular that I felt I was in a different part of the world. Little did I know this was the last experience I was having of the falls.

Today all that is left of the falls is a series of rapids, a lot less raging than when I first visited the site. This came after the government decided to put up a hydro-power dam in 2007 to support the electricity crisis that had hit the country at the time. Industries, schools, hospitals, residences used to suffer with daily power shortages as a result hindering the economy of the country in the long run. But though the electricity issue was addressed, the scenery of Bujagali falls will never be the same again. People of this generation will now have to look to internet to understand what the Bujagali falls experience was back then.

Activites like white-water rafting, kayaking still operate on the falls though they had to allocate them to below the dam area. This means people were cut off from the enjoyment of the first set of rapids and won't feel the adrenaline the version of the falls before the creation of the dam would create.

All in all Bujagali falls is still one of the most exciting areas to visit in East Africa that will give your money value. It is located at a point where River Nile comes out of Lake Victoria that is 6Km away from the source of the Nile. You can't miss it if your touring Uganda.
