What does Christmas look like in Uganda?
Christmas is an exceptional day that is celebrated in an extraordinary way by Christian countries. In Uganda, a lot happens on Christmas. It is literally the time when you would wish to be a kid again, so you do not have to buy gifts, haha! Arranging Christmas dinner and basically you have to get out that ol’ tree.
How is Christmas celebrated in Uganda?
In Uganda Christmas is beyond the birth of Jesus and we celebrate it in this way;
Christmas Cantata.
I do not have the faintest idea whether other churches outside of Uganda have cantata, but mainly here the kids below 12 years organize hymns in several music movements and they act out roles of the different characters in the Bible during the church service. They normally give out ice cream or cupcakes to the congregation on Christmas as they watch the kids.
Christmas Decorations.
The whole of Kampala city is filled with Christmas baubles, lights and tree skirts; basically, it looks so cute. The mien of the city is enough to get you excited about Christmas.
Christmas Dinner.
I love Christmas food! YAY! It is hard to believe, but in Uganda, chicken is the "chairman" of Christmas; no chicken, no Christmas. People travel all the way to their villages, so they can share a meal with their loved ones on that special day.
Gift giving.
Children in Uganda don't believe in Santa Claus like kids in Australia, and they don't expect gifts; however, families bless each other with food crops. It is only a small percentage that receive gifts on Christmas.
Indeed, christmas in uganda is the day.
Additionally we occasionally have a hang out either on the eve, or the very x-mas evening.
