| An old symbol of Ukrainian Christmas is a didukh - a Christmas decoration made of straw. However, this symbol of the winter holiday is very ancient and therefore pagan in origin. Now I will tell you about it, but first I want to explain why I decided to talk about this straw talisman right now, not on Christmas Eve, which is celebrated in Ukraine on January 6th. The thing is, this huge straw monument was in the center of our small town until recently, and I took these photos at a time when the Christmas spirit had already left our hearts. But that day was good weather and I wanted to make some shots. So, in ancient times, our ancestors celebrated New Year in September, after the harvest was harvested, and this straw bouquet was a symbol that the family would now be able to survive the harsh winter, as a rich harvest was harvested. Then, when Christianity came to our lands, all pagan holidays were replaced by Christian ones, Christmas began to be celebrated instead of the winter solstice, and New Year began to be celebrated a week later, January 1, and it became inextricably linked to this holiday, the second in importance in winter holidays cycle. And people continued to be made the New Year's symbol, didukh, with straw from the new crop, often well before New Year's, and it gradually became a symbol of Christmas until it was replaced by a Christmas tree much later. But in the Ukrainian villages did not forget about the didukh and always put it near the Christmas tree. And when Ukraine regained its independence after the collapse of the Soviet Union, didukh experienced a true renaissance and left the underground. | Давнім символом українського Різдва є дідух — різдвяна прикраса з соломи. Проте цей символ свята є дуже давнім, а тому язичницьким за походженням. Зараз я вам розповім, проте спочатку я хочу пояснити чому я вирішила розповісти про цю штукенцію із соломи аж тепер, а не напередодні Різдва, яке в Україні святкують 7 січня. Річ у тому, що цей величезний пам’ятник із соломи знаходився в центрі нашого маленького містечка ще донедавна і я зробила ці фотографії у той час, коли різдвяний дух вже покинув наші серця. Але того дня стояла гарна погода і мені захотілося зробити кілька кадрів. Отож, в прадавні часи наші предки святкували Новий Рік у вересні, після того як було зібрано врожай, і цей букет із соломи був символом того, що тепер родина зможе пережити сувору зиму, адже зібрано багатий врожай. Потім, коли на наші землі прийшло християнство, усі язичеські празники були замінені християнськими, Різдво стали святкувати замість дня зимово сонцестояння, а Новий Рік став святкуватися на тиждень пізніше, 1 січня і став нерозривно пов’язаним із цим святом, другим у за важливістю зимовим святом, а символ Нового року, дідух, продовжували робити із соломи з нового врожаю, часто задовго до настання Нового року і він поступова став символом Різдва, поки його набагато пізніше не замінила ялинка. Але в українських селах про дідух не забули і завжди ставили його біля різдвяної ялинки. А коли Україна відновила свою незалежність після розпаду Радянського Союзу, то дідух пережив справжній ренесанс і вийшов з підпілля. |
