Goodbye TwittersteemCreated with Sketch.

in #twitter9 years ago (edited)

So after not that long - I actually wrote about it here on Steemit when I joined - I have closed my Twitter-account. I have 30 days to reconsider, but it was not really a place for me. And even though I only opened the account to promote my comic aboutPhill from GCHQ I never really got in contact with people that I did not have better contact with here on Steemit or on Diaspora.

Well... except for the Nigerian/British entrepreneur girl that I had some laughs with. But she was a lonely bird...

and so is Twitter, now that I have left.

I have a mastodon account... actually I have two now, but this one is probably the one I will use in the future as it seems to have the best up-time. You'll find it here:

Mastodon functions about the same as Twitter, it's just a federated network with many decentralised servers. It seems to be much easier for me to connect to people there, and I even have been able to promote Steemit some times, with the help of the always active @steevc.

So let's finish with some bird-music

well at least with steem you won't get censored like you can on twitter.

As long as people have anti voting bots, you can in fact get censored on Steem. I have seen just this past week seen a user get downvoted over by that broken "cheetah" bot.

There will be more checks and balances when the viewership grows.

No, that is true. Plus: the decentralised model do give a lot more freedom to people, and that is also forming the environment.

Yes, the flag is moderation too.

People can are also get censored right here. Have seen it a few times.

Everything is on the blockchain. View it yourself.

That said, there is certainly a form of economic censorship but that is in part a design choice.

Good for you! I'm keeping my twitter account for a while... but will mostly be using it as a vehicle to spread awareness of Steemit; it's an almost 10-year old account with 1500+ pretty targeted (writing-related, mostly) followers.

I understand that completely. To me it was a very short experiment to see if the mainstream that I had turned my back on maybe was useful. To me it wasn't I was probably to late, Twitter has changed and is used like you do, as a communication channel for already consolidated Twitter accounts.

Fine to use that to get more people to join Steemit :)

I think that steemit and twitter are very different, this is a big advantage of Steem :-)

What interests me most is the community, and people say that the Twitter community was fine and thriving some years ago. I am mostly interested in places where I can talk to people. But the Twitter of 2017 was just a cacophony of people shouting.

Steemit is a good place that I enjoy, Diaspora, and Mastodon likewise.

I forgot I have an account on Mastodon. I think the best bet is just have an account up everywhere, but keep focused on one or just a couple of places to share or promote. Twitter is a really good site, I never once thought of it as a community though, just as a bunch of people on their own individual soap boxes all across the world. It really has good uses, and while I am definitely for decentralized solutions over anything centralized, I feel Twitter has done good at keeping themselves hands off. When members of Anonymous or other groups are using Twitter as a means for communication, I still feel it has good purpose, and not in the same way at all that Steemit provides.

If I had a Twitter account with 1500 followers I would definitely keep it and do the promotion thing that needs to be done. The truth is that I never was that good at promoting, and starting on Twitter now is harder than it was when it was younger.

I laughed at the soap-box analogy because that is very much what it is like. So after many years of doing what I not do very well I have learned that I better just do what I can manage... and Twitter simply disappeared from my daily routines, whereas Steemit and the other networks like Mastodon and Diaspora worked for me.

Twitter is like a group of three years old kids screaming and Steemit is like the Vienna Symphony Orchestra.

Hahaha, yes! That is exactly how I felt. :)

Wait before you close your account keep it open maybe for things like this https://steemit.com/steem/@thecryptofiend/steem-needs-your-help-in-the-btcc-poll

I applaud anyone that pulls away from the "easy to get drawn into monoliths" of the internet. Who knows, maybe steem will become one of those. Maybe it will hold its integrity better over time.

Yes, social media is often discussed as if it was the technology behind that constitutes what it is, but it is mainly the people using it that decides the experience.

I agree. The way I see it, and in fact the way I see the entire internet, is one big forum. Its all basically pages with various ways to interact. Somehow the interface coupled with the community makes it one type of page and not another.

I had to leave twitter, mostly because of sponsored adverts.

I also quit twitter few months ago. I'm fine without it. I use diaspora* now.

You are using Diaspora :) I have two public accounts:

I am not ready to give up Twitter yet! Maybe I will soon. :-)

No, I just wasn't the Twitter man. Others have benefits from Twitter, I never really was close. 4 month and I gave up. So i obviously didn't have the stamina.
