Broken
The wind swept the ground raising dust to the air as he drove away. Little Nina stared, she had little understanding about what was happening. She could hear her mother sob, she could hear the cries of regret and the unforeseen consequences.

Tears dropped down from her eyes to the ground upon which she stood. She checked to see if the man at the booth was watching all this and yes! He was but his silence made her not to understand what was wrong or right. He then waved at her as if he didn't observe her bad mood.
Seeing an opportunity to get a comforting hug, she ran to him and he raised her up unto his laps for her to sit.
He said "many things will happen, but not many things will happen to you"
She could barely understand this word. He took her to meet her mother who already had some cigarettes on the ashtray.
He gave a short look at her and turn away, leaving Nina at the doorstep. He went back to the booth. Nina ran to her mother, she wiped her tears with her soft cold palms, this forced out more tears from her eyes and soon Nina joined in and they could only hug each other.
Five months passed, still the man who drove the car did not drive back, Nina had already gotten used to this absence, but would do anything to see him again. Her mother already had a job at the restaurant down town and was coping financially as a single mother. She had gone back to attending church service and making herself available for the group meetings. Even as a single mother, she grew stronger! Nina was at the brink of starting another part of development as she was going to graduate from primary year 6. She was excited about all this and wanted to be more happy than exited.
It's has been 6 months now since the absence of the one who also brought her into the world. Nina sometimes felt intimidated and emotionally bitten when she meets her friends from school in the morning and them having thier parent drop them off.
Tomorrow was the graduating ceremony, it was Nina best day, at least that was she thought since everything seemed to be going well and fine not until she was told that her father has just been shot dead. Her mother felt it was a lot for Nina to contain but knew she needed to know.
With the bad news reaching her so early, so was the next day also- the day where she starts to think of accepting what is, and what's not.
She was quick to wake, and early to finish her duty. She had her mother clean her and put on some new clothes which her father had bought for her on her previous birthday.
Her mother dropped her off, she was going to sing a song that day, a song that says- "what is love?".
She would listen to it back home and cry and then sleep only to be awoken from a nightmare.
Time passed, events unfold and the performing number reached hers.
She ran off to the stage. "My Mum taught me this, please join me!" There was enough silence for the murmurs to be heard.
She could predict what warm feeling her mother would be filled with. Her mother wiped the tears that fell on her cheek.
