Lady Stoneheart was one of the most anticipated characters in Game of Thrones, and the creators have finally explained why they dispensed with her in the series.

Beware, this article contains plot spoilers for the A Song of Ice and Fire books!

Game of Thrones took on the daunting task of adapting a Song of Ice and Fire, the fantasy saga of George RR Martin, to television. One of the difficulties of the adaptation was precisely the possibility of exceeding the base material, since Martin is still writing the sixth book in the series.

The end of Game of Thrones disenchanted a large part of the fandom and more than one member of the cast, and the creators came to pronounce on the controversy... and again DB Weiss and David Benioff have returned to pronounce on some differences between the books and the series.

The HBO series has not been without controversy since long before its last season, especially due to the differences with the books, which became more accentuated the further the series progressed. The differences range from plot deletions, personality changes, and even the outright deletion of certain characters. This is the case of Lady Stoneheart, one of the most anticipated characters and that we finally did not get to see in the television adaptation.

Lady Stoneheart is Catelyn Stark, who is resurrected after being killed at the Red Wedding and becomes the leader of the Brotherhood Without Banners, as Beric Dondarrion gives her his own flame that keeps him alive and gives his life for her can return. We don't know much else about the character, as she has appeared very little in the books, other than that she has a very different physique than Catelyn, with white skin and hair, and that she can barely speak from the cut in her throat.

The appearance of this character could bring a lot of things to the plot, especially since she has sworn revenge against the Lannisters, Bolton, Frey and everyone involved in the Red Wedding, but Weiss and Benioff decided not to include her to avoid spoilers from the books. The showrunners developed their reasons a bit better, claiming that being such a minor character in the books thus far, Lady Stoneheart did not pass the bar for the series, as did many other minor characters.

Another reason that the creators have explained is precisely the death and resurrection of Jon Snow, since they wanted him to have a lot of impact on the series and repeating the play with two characters could make it less important. Benioff and Weiss also explained that the Red Wedding is one of the most important moments in the series, and they felt that Catelyn's death would have been very gratuitous if she were just to come back like nothing.

Martin is certainly known to plan things for the character, as the last time he appeared in the books Martin left us with a tremendous cliffhanger about Brienne's future and Lady Stoneheart's plans, but we'll have to wait for the arrival of Winds of Winter to find out what will happen to her. What do you think? Are you convinced by the Game of Thrones showrunners' reasons for excluding the character?
