Marvel's Runaway Review

The plot of the new superhero series “Marvel’s Runaways” may seems a bit too much: What if you found out that your parents were supervillains? The six teens at the center of the series — dorky Alex (Rhenzy Feliz), good-hearted Karolina (Virginia Gardner), lacrosse champion Chase (Gregg Sulkin), lefty Gert (Ariela Barer), emo Nico (Lyrica Okano), and (unknown label) Molly (Allegra Acosta) — aren’t exactly friends when we meet them, despite all attending the same upper-class high school in Brentwood. They’ve grown up together and their parents are members of the Pride, a group that the kids have always believed to be a boring charity organization, until one dreadful night when they discover the secrets behind the Pride.
“Runaways” is more ambitious than the common teen drama (do you remember the Sex and th city prequel?). The show do not just introducing the six lead characters quickly. It take the time to show them as more complex than can be described by a simple label. Meanwhile, the show also feature their very different sets of parents, who are already clearly flawed human beings, before the series reveal their secrets motivations.

Marvel’s TV shows could be separated in two categories: the somewhat for-all series like “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” or “Agent Carter” and the far more adult, graphic Netflix adaptation like “Daredevil” and “Jessica Jones.” Obviously, “Runaways” is neither, unattached by broadcast standards and offering a grounded, character-focused look at its young cast. That distinct approach makes it all the more intriguing when events of a more fantastical nature begin happening, be it the introduction of superpowers, magic (?), futuristic technology, or maybe even a visit from a jurassic guest.
Runaways could be great if it get deeper into the question of whether it’s possible to be a bad person and a good parent, a different take on leading a double life than is standard in superhero storyline . But in the first four episodes, at least, it doesn’t seize that opportunity to stand out.
