You vs. Wild (Netflix interactive series)

in #tv7 years ago

British survivalist Bear Grylls (awesome name by the way and as far as I can find it is his real name) came onto my radar with the "Man vs. Wild" show where he would put himself in crazy situations that most of us would die in. I thought the show was entertaining because the situations were crazy and I actually learned a thing or two (not that I would ever be in these situations, but you never know!)

Anyway, You vs. Wild is brand new on Netflix and it only the 2nd interactive show I have ever seen. So far it is pretty entertaining.

Basically, in this show a scenario is created such as getting to remote villages through very unforgiving terrain. From the very start, you make choices that determine the outcome of the episode including what sort of gear to have Bear bring with him on the journey.

Bear explains the pros and cons of each "crossroad" that you encounter and then the episode carries on using only the choices that you made. This is an interesting approach to TV and for the most part I quite enjoy being able to make choices although many times it seems a bit arbitrary and regardless of which option you choose you still make it to the end, it simply has a different method of getting there.

I have only once had the episode end due to a wrong choice, but then you are immediately given the chance to go back and make the correct decision.

I don't have any children, but if I did I think we would really enjoy watching this show together and the fact that everyone can learn a thing or two is just an added bonus. Obviously the scenarios are rigged, but the kiddos don't need to know that. You need to have the correct type of device in order to be able to watch this. Most Smart TV's can do it and if you have a PS4 or computer hooked up, that works as well.

I don't know how long this will stay entertaining for a person on their own, but if you have young kids, I think this show would be amazing - It's also very family-friendly. You decide!

On a scale of "Urgh!" to "Wowsers!" I give You vs. Wild a score of

"Yip Yip Yip!"

I totally agree with your analysis :)

The interactive aspect is quite interesting. Because it's obviously rigged (like you wrote) it's not really exciting, but you could learn a thing or two. For kids it would be great, I think.

I have seen some episodes and probably will watch the rest.

I like what Netflix is trying to do with these interactive series and after the success of Bandersnatch it was obvious that they would keep em coming and what's better than a good old Bear Grylls adventure?

drink own piss to revive. 😅😅

Seems like this one has a what an call an unpredictable inevitability, well I like the concept of no matter where you take, you'll reach the same place it means the series may be unpredictable even if the outcome of the end seems accounted for definitely, I will love to see this one

looks interesting

Wow, I can't even imagine the amount of time that had to be spent on the editing of this. It is pretty impressive to think that they thought up and played out all of the scenarios that they presented to the viewers. Bear has always been pretty great at what he does and this appears to be no exception to that.
