Ozark Season 2: first views

Ozark is my current favorite series on Netflix. I binge watched the entire season 1 in just a few days when i was back visiting friends in the States not long ago. As you may recall, I have a new-found respect for Jason Bateman both as an actor and a director (he directs all of these too if i am not mistaken) and overall find it to be an interesting take on crime drama as it sees Martin Byrd (Bateman) as a criminal mastermind who seriously lacks and sort of viciousness - although we see him start to lose "heart" over time the same way that it happened to Walter White in Breaking Bad.

The story progresses as he attempts to find more and more methods of laundering money for the Mexican Cartel and for the life of me I don't understand how this equates to profit for himself. It seems as though he keeps tossing out hush money and losing a couple hundred thousand here, a couple hundred thousand there, and doesn't ever seem to run out. I guess I just don't understand washing money very well.

The story stays interesting enough but the series isn't without its problems and the main one is that I am starting to get a little bit bored. You see the formula for every episode is pretty much the same. It starts out with a re-cap of the previous things, then some great new developmental success as far as a new project that is going to solve all of their woes is concerned, only to have something go terribly wrong with the same project. Occasionally someone gets shot but up to now they have always been rather minor characters and I suppose I am waiting for something to happen that is truly shocking.

I do enjoy the addition of Cade Langmore, who is Ruth's father and up to this point he has been in prison and was a relative non-issue. He is an unpredictable tinderbox that plays by his own rules. I am only a few episodes in but I would be willing to bet that he dies an untimely death at the hands of the Byrd family - my guess is the son does it. Any scene he is in ends up being terrifying as you never know what sort of crazy S**T he is going to do next.

He is also in phenomenal shape for a man who is nearly 50 years old. It gives people like me hope :)

At this point I have to say that my interest in Ozark is slipping a little bit and I sincerely hope that they have something shocking planned for the plot-line at this point because for now the series just seems to be on formulaic repeat and they just substitute different characters into the "we almost got this amazing thing and now it is falling apart" that is done time and time again.

So, I started watching this based on your recommendation. About 7 episodes into Season 1. Definitely enjoying it and it gives me some heavy Breaking Bad vibes, just not from the character that you seem to relate it to. In Breaking Bad, it was Walter White’s fall into evil that led the show, but Martin doesn’t seem to have that character arc. He’s been doing evil things since the show started.

What I expect instead is to see his wife as she gets more involved in the business, get that taste of power and like it. I’d be surprised if she doesn’t surpass him in value and finally shift the power balance of the family to her, thus taking away the one thing that Martin holds over her which is control over the family’s destiny.

Basically, I’m starting to believe this isn’t about him shifting to doing evil, but hers.

Thanks for the recommendation by the way. Would have totally missed this one.

that is an extremely interesting point of view. Hmmmm, i may be looking out for that now because given her demeanor and history, it does seem like it could be possible!
