What to do when your internet gonna cost you 160 USD per month...

Leaking data

So I just recently moved to Manila and I made a big mistake while choosing my AirBnb flat. Why? Because I forgot about one very subtle thing which is... The internet connection. The flat itself is perfect, in the brand new condominium, with the gym, swimming pool, sauna and all the facilities you would like to have. But there is no direct internet connection to my flat. Which was listed on the AirBnb page but I forgot to read it before booking.

So now I ended up spending at least 2000 PHP on SIM data top ups which is around 40 USD. That's pretty high cost because I could just look for another apartment even more expensive but with internet connection provided for free. SMART data plan cost 1000 PHP for 4.5 gigabyte of data plus 1.1 for video and YouTube only. And my data was leaking fast because I we were watching movies online, YouTube on my laptop etc. So I decided to put some measures on it and they turned out to be very beneficial.

So first of all I decided to use my laptop as less as possible and just stick to my phone. I also changed my main web browser to Opera Mini which is the best when it comes to saving data. I also set it to non picture mode so I'm browsing just text websites which saves my a lot of data. Plus I'm less distracted and I can just focus on reading white papers and Bitcoin Talk threads. So I mainly use Discord and Slack to contact with me team members and developers

I also restricted data usage for most of the apps.

Advantages of simplicity:

  • I can focus on my research,
  • stick to use most important apps which is Slack for talking with all the teams and Discord to keep in touch with my cryptocurrency investment groups,
  • I'm not distracted with doing 10 different thighs while I should be doing research on the cryptocurrency,
  • data sonsumption became so low that 4.5 G might be enough for 2 weeks

I recommend Opera Max for minimizing trafic on Mobile Devices :)

That was last project in Opera Software which I was part of, before I changed my job :)

Is it much better than the Opera Mini which I'm using now?

Opera Max is a separate application, which works like compressing proxy for all applications. You can use you Facebook application or Google Chrome, and Opera Max will reduce your data traffic :)

Fantastic advice!

+1 for Opera Max.

That very expensive. We get 28 GB 4g data for 28 days(with a 1GB/day daily limit) for just 5$ !!

That was an inconvenient experience. Btw, I've discovered that steemit spends a lot of data. I can't give any technical information to explain 'cos I don't know the technicalities. But I discovered that when I used a data-capped plan. I only used steemit for like 3 hours without any video whatsoever yet it already consumed 800 mb. I suggest that you look for those offers that have unlimited data if you need lots of data. But I guess you don't need to since you'll only be researching and prefer not to be easily distracted.

I just had to cut off unnecessary data usage and I found out that I was wasting my time. I'm now browsing Steemit using Opera Mini without any pictures and use it on my laptop only when I want to post.

I searched for some different plans but this is the only I could get, there is that 800 mb a day for 30 days which might be better than buying just 4.5 GB.

Ahh.
Yeah I think that 800 mb/day is a good deal. Is it the one that requires you to buy an internet stick or the one that you can have immediately with your phone? You should try it.

LOVE the uncertainty you get yourself into.

And yet you found a solution.

Still no joy in living a limited Internet life, isn't it?

Can't imagine throttling data.

Typo: things, not thighs.

Going to fix this soon. It's just temporary.
