5 Tools to make an Administrator's life easiersteemCreated with Sketch.

in #tutorial7 years ago (edited)

Today I am going to write a little bit about the tools that you can use to connect to different servers, the main protocol considered here is SSH, but some of the tools support other protocols too

MobaXterm

MobaXterm is my favorite terminal emulator for following reasons:

  1. It is easy to use
  2. it supports SSH, Telnet, Rsh, RDP, VNC, FTP, SFTP, ...
  3. Supports multi-tabbing
  4. having editor
  5. can act as different servers like http, FTP, TFTP, TElnet, NFS, ...
  6. Embedded X server
  7. The free version let you to save up to 10 connections for future uses
    7.And some other plugins
I personally use MobaXterm and I am quiet happy with it, most of the time I don't need another tool to do my administration job. And multi-tabbing feature is very helpful.
You can Download MobaXterm from here

puTTY

I don't think there is anyone who works with Linux servers and has not heard puTTY's name.
puTTY is an open-source terminal emulator which works on different operation systems like Windows and Linux, it supports SSH , telnet, rlogin and and serial. as you probably know puTTY supports encryption(requirement for SSH connections).it also supports X11-Forwarding.

puTTY is very simple, does not support multi-tabbing and when you are using it you feel that it is not that user friendly but all things considered it is good to try it and see if it suits you or not.
you can download puTTy here

DamWare

Source
One of the best free SSH clients is DameWare for sure, with it you can have different tabs, you can save your credentials, you can set your favorite sessions, etc.. and also it is completely free
You can download Dameware SSH from here

Bitvise

I recently got to know Bitvise, and I kind of like it, the moment you login to your server, it will give you 2 windows

  1. terminal emulator
  2. SFTP connection

this way you can run commands, scripts, ... and also copy files from your client to the server easily. it is also free.
you can download Bitvise from here

FireSSH

The last one is FireSSH, a very handy extension for Chrome and Firefox. it is good for the times that you don't have proper permission to install an app. the UI is user-friendly and working with it is fun, I myself use it sometimes just to have a change in coloring , theme etc..

the view when you want to login

default theme which is a very calming green :)

Conclusion

A ll of these tools are useful when you have to interact with different types of servers remotely, you can choose yours by considering your budget, type of servers that you are interacting with, protocols that your tool needs to support , etc... or you can do what I do and use 2 - 3 of them on demand.
