Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Thursday (19/8) local time, urged European countries to take responsibility for Afghan migrants.

Erdogan also made it clear that Turkey had no intention of becoming a "European migrant shelter unit" amid the country's turmoil after the takeover by the Taliban.

Since the Taliban entered Kabul over the weekend, scenes of unrest have occurred as thousands of people try to flee. There are fears of a repeat of the interpretation of Islamic law imposed during the previous Taliban rule, which ended 20 years ago.

Thousands of people have also crossed into Turkey in recent weeks, as the Taliban swept through Afghanistan en route to the capital Kabul.

Speaking after a cabinet meeting, Erdogan said Europe needed to take responsibility for Afghans fleeing their country.

The president also added that Ankara has taken action along its border with Iran - the main route for Afghan migrants to enter Turkey.

Erdogan said Turkey could engage in talks with the new government that the Taliban will set up to discuss "our common agenda."
