The Book of Proverbs, with its important wisdom, invites men in its famous sayings to avoid the hardness of heart, that is, to avoid the sins of anger and pride, which are capital sins in man. Because everyday reality, and in particular many stories from the Bible, teach that between madness as such and these serious sins there is very little difference. This is why the sacred scriptures teach an irrefutable truth: "Whoever shows contempt for his neighbor lacks judgment, but a man of understanding remains silent" Proverbs 11:12.
In other words, what this famous proverb is saying is that the hardness of heart is synonymous with the lack of common sense, and common sense in very simple words has to do with what "fits in." This is why the virtues of humility and mercy (compassion, kindness, gentleness) are so often cited and praised; pride collides head-on with the other as a person, and generates disputes and conflicts where there are none, the man with a hard heart becomes first a danger to himself and then to others. And so the Bible explains: "Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm" Proverbs 13:20.
And an example of how hardness of heart is a source of great suffering for the entire society was the story of how the fool of Rehoboam, the son of King Solomon, due to his lack of empathy and compassion towards others in the assembly of Shechem, caused the division of the Kingdom of Israel in two.
But the Bible also teaches that the man endowed with understanding, the opposite of the arrogant man, knows when to speak and when not to, and thus, to avoid conflict and the consequent suffering. The Bible educates men to seek wisdom as the most important spiritual good.
