Trust in God above all things: Unless the LORD builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Psalm 127:1
The Psalm 127 is considered a sapiential psalm, that is, a psalm dedicated to teaching how to find the correct path in life. And the message of the Psalm is very simple: all blessings come from God, and especially prosperity.
But to be blessed, the Book of Psalms, like all the sapiential books, calls man to live very precise spiritual gifts, the trust in God above all things and the fear of the Lord (constancy, firmness, devotion); and this is so because these spiritual gifts are the most important gifts of the Old Testament, the concept of faith as it is known in the New Testament does not exist in the sapiential texts of the Bible like the Book of Psalm or the Book or Proverbs.
And the Psalm teaches something else, something very important, those who do not trust in God strive in vain, the contempt for the fear of God leads men to a path full of risks and uncertainty. In this way, wisdom is presented to man as the most important good, even more than money and power.
With these words begins the sapiential Psalm:
"Unless the LORD builds the house,
the builders labor in vain.
Unless the LORD watches over the city,
the guards stand watch in vain.
In vain you rise early
and stay up late,
toiling for food to eat—
for he grants sleep to those he loves" Psalm 127:1-2.
There is no safe house or city if the Lord does not bless it, says the Psalm, as a reminder that when the Israelites forgot God they lost the most valuable thing they had. The spiritual gift of fear of God, the Sacred Scriptures teach men, is the cornerstone on which man must build, and this is so because the fear of God is not only something that pleases God but also because it is also something very precise: common sense in decision making.
Psalm 127 is an invitation to blessedness because the righteous inherit the most excellent while sinners only inherit destruction.
