I don't understand people's certainty that the assassination attempt means Trump is guaranteed to win the election.

We are incredibly polarized and voters before the assassination attempt were pretty certain about their vote preferences.

And we have absolutely no idea how Trump will use this. I can definitely envision Trump using it in alienating ways. Prominent Republicans associated with him have already done so. The RNC speakers are a gaggle of nutjobs.

In a much less polarized time, Reagan was shot in March 1981. He got a brief boost in approval and it was entirely gone a couple months later.

I feel like people just want something external to the process to blame. The GOP has their nonsensical election fraud allegations. The Dems know what voter ID laws are actually about so they're not going to go that route.

But they can't just admit they suck either. So in 2016 it had to be Russian facebook memes instead of Hillary being horrid, and now here's an excuse-on-a-platter for losing this time around.

If they're lucky they'll even be able to make everyone forget the spent the weeks before this happened acting like the debate was what put the fork in Biden.
