Trump v/s Earth
Over the past few decades if anyone has seen a plot of Hollywood movie about world catastrophe they must be aware that it all starts from the United States of America. The alien attack, spread of a deadly virus or a zombie apocalypse, all has its humble beginnings from the U.S.(:-P). So it was almost imperative that a real world catastrophe should start from there. For those of you who have been living under a rock for the past week Donald Trump has taken another controversial decision to withdraw United States from the Paris Climate Agreement. If you didn't already know this then you will surely ask huh!!! what is Paris Climate Agreement? What's so special about it? and why should i care? So to answer these burning questions of yours I am here. So lets start with the Paris Climate Deal.
Paris Climate Deal
- It is an agreement within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) dealing with greenhouse gas emissions mitigation, adaptation and finance starting in the year 2020. In simple words it is a number of countries coming together and saying that YES we want to help in mitigating global warming effects.
- This accord aims to keep the change in temperature to below 2 C(35 F), I agree that it might seem small but it can be catastrophic for the people of the world especially those who live anywhere near the sea.
- It sets a nonbinding agreement for countries to reach peak greenhouse gas emissions “as soon as possible.
- It asks richer countries to help out poorer countries: to give them capital to invest in green technologies, but also to help them brace for a changing world.
Alaska's Pedersen Glacier has retreated steadily over the past century, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The top photo, taken during the summer of 1917, shows a lagoon filled with icebergs. The bottom photo, dated August 2005, shows the same lagoon now filled with sediment, grasses and shrubs.
This is just one example of what global warming has done to this planet. A large majority of environmental scientists warn that if global temperatures rise by more than 2 C above pre-industrial levels, the consequences will be severe and, in some cases, irreversible.
Now that we have established the fact that global warming is BAD! we should have a look at what President Donald Trump thinks about it.
Donald Trumps' Says
- The deal is a draconian financial and economical burden on America.
- It will cost America more than 2 million lost jobs by 2025.
- Cost to American GDP will be 3 trillion dollars by 2040.
- This deal punishes the United States.
So these are just a few of the claims made by Donald Trump during his press conference last week at the Rose Garden in Washington DC. The point to be noted here is that Trump made this decision without any scientific mind on his staff. The list of science vacancies in the Trump Administration is long. Trump has not appointed someone to run the White House Office of Science and Technology. So its baffling to come to this decision purely on monetary basis especially when the fate of Earth is at stake. Money is a small price to pay to live on this beautiful planet.
Its also to be noticed that the withdrawal process takes four years so Mr. Trump will not have withdrawn from the deal within his tenure. So this step makes no sense unless he is throwing his hat in the ring for next presidential term. So is this withdrawal good for the american people or just another decision made by Trump to further his interests, one cant help but wonder.
Mr. Trump made bold claims without any merit and has been criticized by most of the participating nations and also the companies in US are also opposing the presidents' decision. It seems like most of the big companies like Nike, Shell, IBM, Microsoft and many more and even Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who served on presidential advisory councils, immediately made good on a promise to leave those roles. But the most shocking statement came from the most unexpected place, North Korea, a spokesperson from the country was quoted saying “This is the height of egoism and moral vacuum seeking only their own well-being even at the cost of the entire planet and, at the same time, a short-sighted and silly decision ignorant of the fact that the protection of the global environment is in their own interests.” You know you have gone wrong when North Korea calls you out like this. So all in all you can pretty much say that the decision taken by Trump was moronic decision if I have to say generously.
The Future
Like in the Hollywood movies where the US, after spreading the alien attack or zombie apocalypse to the world, comes up with a plan to defeat those evil forces the big companies in the US has come together to fight against the menacing decision taken by Trump. Companies like Apple, Nike, Microsoft, Intel just to name a few has pledged to uphold the promise they made to cut on carbon emissions on their own and the state of California(the richest state in US, which after Trumps election made an unsuccessful attempt to leave the US) has signed an agreement with China to work together on reducing emissions, as the state's governor warned that "disaster still looms" without urgent action.
Helping Hand
One positive thing that can be taken out from this is that till now climate change seemed too far off in the future but what this decision can do is unite the people of the world to accept the fact that global warming is real and is happening now. So the steps have to be taken now if we want our children and grand children to have a habitable earth. So the least we can do is spread this message to our friends and family and start contributing towards giving a new breath of life to the plant which gave us ours.
You can let me know what can be the steps we as a responsible steem community can take to help in this noble initiative and leave your opinions in the comments. Lets build a better tomorrow. :)
