We have absurd tendencies towards excessive civility.

Federal judge: “Could a president who ordered SEAL Team 6 to assassinate a political rival, and is not impeached, would he be subject to criminal prosecution?”

Trump's lawyer: “If he were impeached and convicted first... there is a political process that would have to occur.”

One of the judges noted that a president could then just resign and not even face impeachment. They also noted that Trump's lawyers made the exact opposite argument during his second impeachment after January 6th. They argued that he didnt need to be impeached as prosecutors could bring criminal charges themselves if necessary.

I don't think Republicans have thought it through that rulings on this would affect not just Trump, but all presidents.
