Facebook Frames Stephen King’s Castle Rock based on fictional town in Main used in many of his books/movies
- Disney’s Castle Rock in Culver City California
The White House Set used also in Independence Day
Director Rob Reiner also produced the film under his Castle Rock Entertainment banner, founded in the late 1980s and named after the fictional Maine town of Castle Rock, a Stephen King creation also featured in Reiner’s film Stand By Me.
Just how many Castle Rock’s are there?
Multiple Meanings?
What are the Odds that Dead Zone was based on a Stephen King book that Also aired in. . .you guessed it Castle Rock.
When will it become Mathematically Impossible?
Book written in 1979, TV series started in 2002.
The Rob Reiner one is interesting considering River Phoenix was just a kid when he did Stand By Me and Rob directed.
Even more interesting in the manner he died where his mom stated in People magazine,
“His friends, co-workers and the rest of our family know that River was not a regular drug user," she said. "He lived at home in Florida with us and was almost never a part of the ‘club scene’ in Los Angeles. ... We feel that the excitement and energy of the Halloween nightclub and party scene were way beyond his usual experience and control."
I did a break down on Reiner once and you can guess what happened.
Here are more interesting facts about River Phoenix and his family.
- His parents, John and Arlyn “Heart” Phoenix, were constantly on the move.
- They lived in Puerto Rico and part of a religious movement called Children of God.
- John and Arlyn served as “archbishops” of Venezuela and Trinidad for several years as part of the controversial religious organization.
- While the children grew up around the globe, over time, their parents realized that something didn’t “seem right” about the group and on Joaquin’s third birthday, they boarded a cargo ship headed for Florida.
According to People Magazine, - Over time, John and Arlyn say they became disillusioned with the group, particularly after its founder, David Berg, began to encourage using sex as a recruitment practice.
As reported in the Washington Post - In the years that followed, Children of God faced accusations of sexual abuse.
- Joaquin and his siblings showed an aptitude for music when they began winning local singing competitions.
- While growing up in Venezuela, River and Rain sang religious songs in the streets for money, and when they moved to Florida, the brother-sister duo won several talent competitions.
- The family moved to Los Angeles for the children to launch successful careers as child actors.
- The children would perform on the streets to earn extra money when they were homeless.
- Taking part in local contests eventually gained the attention of local media.
Once in L.A., Arlyn got a job as a secretary for an executive at NBC, and she met a child actor agent named Iris Burton, who later represented all the Phoenix children, helping them land spots in commercials and on television.
River purchased the family a ranch in Costa Rica, and Joaquin moved to Mexico for a time with his father, according to Vanity Fair.
River and his siblings were raised as vegans.
River’s career quickly took off.
he was a regular on Seven Brides for Seven Brothers when he was 11.
He appeared in television movies, like Celebrity and Surviving: A Family in Crisis,
River starred on-screen alongside his siblings in an ABC After school Special titled Backwards: The Riddle of Dyslexia with Joaquin.
After appearing in his first major motion picture, Explorers,
River landed a role in the coming-of-age film Stand by Me — and became a household name. * he earned an Oscar nomination at 17 for his work in Running on Empty.
n 1989, he portrayed a young Indiana Jones in the prologue of the box-office hit Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, the third installment of the Indiana Jones franchise
River encouraged Joaquin to continue his acting career.
He suggested that Joaquin, who had been using the name Leaf, return to his birth name and continue auditioning.
At the height of his career, River died on Halloween in 1993 from a drug overdose.
that evening, the 23 year old was at the L.A. nightclub, The Viper Room, with his then-girlfriend Samantha Mathis and his siblings Joaquin and Rain.
it wasn’t until they arrived that he told her he had been invited to play with a band that night.
Johnny Depp was the owner of The Viper Room
In 2004, Depp sold his stake in the Viper Room, although he remained connected to the venue through its legacy and continued fame.
There seemed to be a lot of scandals at the Viper Room
According to the Independent concerning the Viper Room
- On 30 October 1993, less than three months after it opened, rising star River Phoenix arrived at the club with siblings Leaf (now known as Joaquin) and Rain to play a set with the band P, whose members included Phoenix’s friends Flea and John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
- During the show Phoenix told a friend he feared he’d overdosed, having taken the combination of heroin and cocaine known as a speedball.
- Moments later the young actor was convulsing in fits on the pavement outside.
People Magazine reports - In the moments leading up to his death, a bouncer pushed him outside the club, where he began having multiple seizures on the sidewalk.
- Joaquin called 911, and River was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center shortly after, where he was deemed to be in full cardiac arrest.
- He had no pulse and no blood pressure and was later pronounced dead.
- He died in the early hours of the morning.
According to the Independent - Phoenix’s death did little to hurt the club’s reputation. It was becoming known for excess
As seen in DJ Music Magazine - The Viper Room is on the list of the most controversial—and beloved—spots for celebrities. Like Studio 54 and the Chateau Marmont hotel, the venue collects scandals, tragedies, and wild stories experienced by the biggest stars in film, music, and fashion.
- A major mystery surrounding the Viper Room is the disappearance of Anthony Fox, the co-owner of the bar.
- In 1999, Anthony accused Johnny Depp in court, alleging that the actor had embezzled millions of dollars from the club.
- However, just one day before Fox was scheduled to testify in court, he mysteriously disappeared.
- His car was found abandoned in Santa Clara, California, days later, but Anthony's body was never found.
- In 2004, Johnny relinquished his share of the Viper Room, which then passed to Fox's daughter.
As reported by Mamamia it's interesting to note that Depp was in the band River was set to play in that night. - that evening, he was set to perform with the band P - a short-lived alternative rock band featuring Depp, among others.
- It was during the band's performance that night when River began to suspect that he was overdosing.
According to Visit West Hollywood
- For the first 20 or so years, the building was actually a small grocery store that served the neighborhood residents working down the hill in a small industrial village called Sherman.
- By the 1940s, however, Sunset Boulevard had transformed from a dusty and unpaved commuter route into the “Sunset Strip,” where celebrities enjoyed eating, drinking and gambling. (Rumor has it that the Las Vegas Strip was originally named after the Sunset Strip.)
- Was called the Melody Room at one time
In the 1960's
From a mini bio in IMBD on Depp's partner
- Sal Jenco used to live with his friend Johnny in a '67 Impala, filled with empty beer cans, somewhere in Florida.
- His acting career started towards the end of 1987, when he went to Vancouver to see his old 'room mate' Johnny, who was now an actor, playing Tom Hanson in teeny-bopper sitcom, 21 Jump Street.
- (Yes, his old pal was Johnny Depp) Sal got the role of 'Blowfish', after he impressed the Jump Street producers with some kind of party trick, involving the expansion of his cheeks, and err... blowing...
- A love of music made Sal form a band called "P", with his mate Johnny and some guy from the Butthole Surfers.
- As an extra bonus point he also co-owns a Hollywood bar with Johnny Depp, called the Viper Room.
This is interesting as Johnny Depp would have been about 7 years older than River and River was playing in the band that night, the his girlfriend didn't know that when they went.
Was he asked on the fly?
- River and Samantha Mathis played in a movie together that was released the same year he died titled The Thing Called Love
- the movie was about two up and coming musicians
As seen on Reddit
This story was allegedly told to several of River’s close friends right after his death by his then girlfriend, Samantha Mathis. This version most closely aligns with River’s autopsy report, as well as an interview John Phoenix (River’s father) gave after River died. Director William Richert claims he met with Samantha three days after River’s death, and the story she told him could’ve implicated those present at the time of the event. The people involved (Rain and Joaquin Phoenix, Samantha Mathis, Johnny Depp, Flea and John Frusciante) didn’t speak publicly about the incident for nearly thirty years, until Samantha did in an interview in 2018 wherein she told a version of the below story to the Guardian, omitting details that would get anyone into trouble.
River’s most recent directors, Peter Bogdonavich and George Sluizer, both believed there was foul play.
River had returned to LA from Utah while shooting what would be his final film, “Dark Blood.” After a day of shooting in LA, River was coming down with a cold and wanted to sleep it off in his hotel room, as he had important meetings the next morning. Siblings Joaquin and Rain were in town to visit and wanted to go to the Viper Room but were underage and would need a celebrity escort to get in.
Samantha volunteered and River planned to stay behind, but got a call from his friend Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, inviting him to play on stage.
A last minute decision, River grabbed his guitar and ran to meet his girlfriend and siblings.
Upon arrival, River was told by Flea that there was no room on the stage for him and he could not play. He then sat in a booth at the back of the club with his group.
John Frusciante, who had recently quit the Chili Peppers and was suffering heroin addiction, was close friends with River. Knowing that River was bummed out about not being able to play on stage, he handed River a Dixie cup filled with unspecified liquid and said “drink this, Riv, it’ll make you feel fabulous.” Unquestioningly, River knocked back the cocktail which was later discovered to be a mixture of 8 times the lethal amount of cocaine and 3 times the lethal amount of heroin, as found in his autopsy report.
There was no drug residue or inflammation found in his nasal passages, no needle marks on his body, and no alcohol found in his blood.
John Frusciante told a panicked Samantha to leave him alone and that “she was spoiling his high.” There was a delay in calling 911- the young people present were not sure whether to call their agents or paramedics due to River’s celebrity status. Rain threw herself on top of her brother to stop his face and hands from smashing into the pavement as his body seized. They watched him thrash helplessly on the ground for nearly ten minutes before a paparazzi convinced Joaquin to call 911. By the time they arrived, River was unresponsive. Flea rode in the ambulance with him. From the time he’d walked into the club to the time he died, it had been only 40 minutes.
Here is a video that Johnny Depp filmed at Frusciante home in Hollywood Hills the year River died (93).
Was Depp setting John up for insanity defense.
This video is chilling and disturbing.
Documentary "Stuff" John Frusciante Circa 1993
Weird as it has a LOT of the people there in the club the night River died.
... she thought was Phoenix in a scuffle with another man, and the two of them being pushed out of the club’s side door by a bouncer.
When she went out on to the street after them, she saw Phoenix drop to the ground and go into convulsions on the pavement.
Thankfully, this was before the paparazzi had became ubiquitous so no one took photos, but it also meant no one was around to help.
“What have you done? What are you on?” Mathis shouted at the other man.
“Leave him alone, you’re spoiling his high,” he retorted.
Mathis desperately tried to get back into the club to get help, but the side door was firmly shut.
So she ran around to the main door, searched through the club for Phoenix’s siblings and they all dashed outside.
(Basically they drag River Phoenix out to get rid of evidences, letting his girlfriend and underage brother outside with no way to come back inside, and no one helped)
As written in US Today
- Mathis said she and Phoenix were with his siblings Leaf (now known as Joaquin) and Rain, and were only stopping by the nightclub, then partly owned by Johnny Depp. But the musician Phoenix switched the plans.
- "He said to me: ‘Oh, there are some people playing music tonight in the club who want me to play with them – that’s OK, right?’” Mathis recalled. “Forty-five minutes later, he was dead.”
Mathis has never spoken about the death, when she and Phoenix were both just 23, “Except to my therapist,” she said in the interview. But the actress saw for the first time the last movie Phoenix completed before he died, which she co-starred in, "The Thing Called Love."
It felt like a sign that "the universe wanted me to talk about him."
Mathis said she came out of the Viper Room bathroom and saw what she thought was Phoenix in a scuffle with another man, and the two of them were pushed out of the club’s side door by a bouncer. After that, she saw Phoenix fall to the pavement in convulsions.
"What have you done? What are you on?” Mathis said she shouted at the other man, who responded: “Leave him alone, you’re spoiling his high."
Phoenix had died from an overdose of cocaine and heroin before paramedics arrived.
Mathis recalled the actor as “sensitive and obsessive. He felt things on his heart very deeply.”
Similar story reported in The Guardian in 2018
Some added info
Mathis thought they were there only to drop off his little brother and sister, “but when we arrived he said to me: ‘Oh, there are some people playing music tonight in the club who want me to play with them – that’s OK, right?’” she says.
It wasn’t OK with her: she thought they would be going straight to her house. “I knew something was wrong that night, something I didn’t understand. I didn’t see anyone doing drugs but he was high in a way that made me feel uncomfortable – I was in way over my head,” she says. But she knew he wanted to stay, and thought it wouldn’t be long – after all, some of his stuff was in the trunk of her car.
Phoenix had always hated fame but considered its one potential benefit was that he could use it for good and change the world, talking urgently in every interview about vegetarianism and the environment. It is a template many have tried to copy, but none succeeded like Phoenix, because he believed in his ideals more intensely than most people believe in anything.
This was the boy who once ran out of a restaurant in tears because his girlfriend, the actor and activist Martha Plimpton, ordered seafood. He was never entranced by the glitz of his own celebrity; when he was nominated for an Oscar in 1989, for his performance in Running on Empty, a journalist on the Oscars red carpet said to him: “It’s easy to get caught up in the Hollywood hoopla, isn’t it?” “Mmm, not for me, it isn’t,” he replied, looking a little surprised by the question. But reacting against success can be as risky as embracing it, because it can elide into self-loathing and confusion.
“I wish I could go someplace where nobody knows me,” he sobbed in his breakout performance in Stand By Me. After he died, his mother Arlyn (known as Heart) told Esquire magazine that her son shared that sentiment: “As River grew, he did become more and more uncomfortable being the poster boy for all good things. He often said he wished he could just be anonymous. But he never was. When he wasn’t a movie star, he was a missionary.
“When River came in to audition, it was obvious that he was just an amazing, amazing talent. He could play instruments, he was so bright and brilliant, he could do anything, really,” says Rob Reiner, who directed Phoenix in Stand By Me. Yet as talented as he was, Reiner had to coax the then 15-year-old to show his pain instead of bottling it inside.
Back in the 1980s, it was known that Phoenix had an eccentric childhood, but, in retrospect, it feels as if few appreciated just how extraordinary it was. His parents, John and Arlyn were travelling counter-cultural hippies and when River was only three, the family joined the Children of God, a Christian cult that believed, among other things, that sex without boundaries was a form of love (Rose McGowan was also raised in the cult).
Phoenix never went to school; instead, his mother contacted the casting director at Paramount, and Phoenix began working at the age of eight. His siblings, Rain, Joaquin, Liberty and Summer, soon followed suit.
“We kinda miss [having a normal childhood] sometimes, missing our friends, but when we go some place we get to meet other people. But then you have to say goodbye to them,” the 13-year-old Joaquin told a journalist in 1987, when a TV crew visited the family home in Florida.
The family was loving and close, but John was complicated. In photos of him from the 1980s, he is the spitting image of Joaquin, and River reportedly saw him more as a little brother than a paternal figure. John had problems with alcohol and, from an extremely young age, Phoenix felt as if he, not his father, had to support the family.
“River said to me in that last year: ‘I just have to make one more movie to put away enough money so my youngest sister can go to college,’” Mathis recalls. “I don’t know if that was true, but I remember him saying that.”
Perhaps in the absence of a father figure, Phoenix filled his life with quasi big brothers who tried to help him: Dermot Mulroney was one, Dan Aykroyd another, and Phoenix and Mathis stayed with the latter for a time at his place in Canada. Aykroyd had lost his best friend, John Belushi, to a drug overdose just over a decade earlier, and he reportedly urged Phoenix to stay away from drugs. Michael Stipe was another. “We met through my sister,” says Stipe. “She’d moved to Florida and became familiar with the whole family. I would visit her and hang out with them, and I have two sisters who I love very much, but River was like my little brother. We’re exactly 10 years apart and he really did feel like a brother to me.”
Phoenix’s mother had moved the children to Florida as they became more successful to keep them away from the seedier elements of LA life. But Phoenix still saw it as his role to save people, and as he started hanging out with various creative people in Los Angeles, he tried to help them come off heroin, going so far as to get one particular individual into rehab. “But when he needed help, they didn’t help him.
Phoenix was younger than James Dean when he died and his death was at least as seminal for his generation. Before he died, he looked like even more of a sure success than Tom Cruise, and his absence made space for other young actors to emerge – DiCaprio, most obviously.
“Leo told me he saw River the night he died, before he went to the Viper Room,” says Reiner. “And that might have been [a warning], because Leo never ever got into drugs.” DiCaprio ended up playing at least two roles that had been intended for Phoenix, taking the lead in The Basketball Diaries and Total Eclipse.
Wild how this old news segment talks about Joaquin walking the line as Johnny Cash when he and June were photographed at the Viper Room!
Celebrity 911 Calls - Joaquin Phoenix
The Tragic Tale of Joaquin Phoenix
Since they began dating in 2016, Phoenix and Mara have primarily kept their relationship under wraps — save for a handful of red carpet appearances and rare interviews. The couple first met in 2012 on the set of the sci-fi drama Her, but Phoenix thought Mara despised him.
Four years later, they costarred in 2016's Mary Magdalene and started dating. They made their red carpet debut as a couple at the Cannes Film Festival in 2017, and later that year, Phoenix revealed he and Mara were living together.
The pair privately got engaged in 2019 before welcoming their first child together in 2020. River was named after Phoenix's brother who died in 1993.
