Wind to Wind

Some years ago , before the democrats destroyed the economy, I was involved in a “wind” project. King mountain it was called. This particular project was being done with foreign machines, made in Denmark. We picked the tower sections up at one of the Ports in Houston.

The tower sections were shipped from Denmark and unloaded at a Houston Port. They were then reloaded onto our trucks and we took them to the project site. It was about five hundred miles away near the west Texas town of McCamey, on top of a mesa they called King Mountain.

They erected the windmills on top of the mesa. More wind up there.

Once we got to the top of the mesa, not an easy task it being a ten percent grade, we’d drop the trailer, pick up an empty and beat it back to Houston. Once there we’d reload and do it again, and again, and again. I worked straight through for several months. Four to “many” loads a week. Those were the days.

It was one of the best run operations I’ve ever been on and I’ve been on windmill projects in Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Colorado, Washington, South Dakota, North Dakota, Iowa and Kansas as well as others in Texas. This was one of, if not, THE last Enron jobs. Say what you will about Enron but they knew how to run a project.

These were fairly large wind turbines for their time. Nothing like what’s being put up now but still fairly large.
So years went by. I changed Carriers, and I changed carriers again. I’ve been with my current carrier almost two years and I get offered this load. Crane from McCamey Texas to Mill Run Pennsylvania.

I wonder. Could it be?

So I got to the location. Yup. Same place.

I follow the operator to where I’m going to pick up the crane.

Several hours later..I’m loaded with a ninety thousand pound Grove Off Road Rubber Tired Crane.

Off To Pennsylvania.

It took a while but I made it.

Pennsylvania’s just like Texas but different. They have high places there and they put WindMills on them. Greener is all.
