Dover Castle

Today I want to take you to Dover castle in England. The castle was first founded in the 11th century and over the years it has been built up and more structures were added on.

The castle is significant for a couple of reasons. First it is the largest castle in England and second is it's location. Dover is located on the east side of England facing the Strait of Dover. About 20 odd miles away is continental Europe and in the old days it was known as the Key to England as it is the closest point between England and Europe.

Its location meant it was an important defensive location to keep England save from invasion such at the First Baron's War in the 13th century from France, the Naplolean War in the 18th century and more recently the Second World War.

When the castle was first built it was mainly built of clay but over time this started to disintegrate and crumble. Later on in the 12th century Henry II added many buildings to the castle including the Great Tower. As you can see, this was built out of stone and still stands the test of time now.

I walked around the castle grounds admiring the century old structure and thinking that these stone paths have probably been around for centuries.

Then I went up to the castle rooftop. The view here was great looking out towards the sea, I hear on a good day one can actually see France from here.

The entrance fee to Dover Castle is quite expensive, it cost nearly £21 for an adult and £54.30 for a family ticket for four. However you can spend nearly a whole day here and there is plenty to do and see for the whole family.
