Xhosa Huts

Driving through the Transkei in South Africa is one of the most scenic drives in South Africa. It consists of endless rolling hills with the traditional Xhosa huts or rondavels in each valley and on top of each hill - and also everywhere in between.

The traditional huts are round with a grass roof but nowadays one also find many sink roof huts and normal square buildings.

Most families build two or more huts; one which serves as a kitchen while the others are used as living and sleeping or storage rooms.

On our visit, we were on a few occasions invited into their huts, and it was interesting to see that they are mostly still sleeping on the floor on a woven matt which is then rolled up and stored during the day.

Most of them do not have running water in the houses - water is fetched daily, either from a community tap or from a nearby river or stream.

Another luxury that we are taking for granted, it a flush toilet in the house. Not having running watter in the house also means that the toilet will be a pit toilet (also known as a "long Drop") and therefore it is seperated from the normal buildings (Mostly for hygienic reasons). On the first photo in this blog, you will see such a toilet next to the hut in the foreground.

On the last day, we left before sunrise, but could not resist stopping at sunrise for our last photo shoot of these rolling hills with the little huts scattered all over the scene. In this photo I placed two ruins of these huts in the foreground, as a reminder that we must tresure our cultures.
