Today I’d like to talk about Ekiben, do you know about it?

What’s Ekiben?

Eki means "Station" and ben is from bento, which means Japanese lunch box. Ekiben or station box lunch is sold at train stations for your long journeys in Japan. It’s a staple for Japanese tourists traveling within Japan.

The menus mainly consist of sushi sets, tenpura, grilled meat with rice, etc. Ekiben originally consisted of rice, and various vegetables and meats depending on the item, served cold or hot. I was amazed the first time I bought a hot one. It was cold when I got it, but then I pulled the string on it and the food started heating up. Wow! Incredible!! That’s Japan.

Where you can buy Ekiben?

You can buy Ekiben at most train stations (JR railway or bullet train). Ekiben prices start at 500 JPY. It’s the best way for travelers in Japan to eat on the go, because it’s so convenient and there are a variety of Ekiben sets at reasonable prices.
