The great tribulation: And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake. Daniel 12:2
The book of Daniel ends with a vision of the prophet about the end of the times, the great tribulation (Daniel 10-12), which is taken up by Jesus in the Gospel of Saint Matthew (Matthew 24). Daniel does not tell us when these times will be, but he gives us a hint, the increase of knowledge: "But you, Daniel, shut up the words and seal the book, until the time of the end. Many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase" Daniel 12:4.
Never in the history of humanity has there been such an increase in knowledge as in the last 100 years. We can affirm then that these times are not far.
This vision of Daniel is also the first announcement about the resurrection of the dead (Daniel 12:2) and the arrival of a "son of man" (Daniel 10:16), referring here most likely to our Lord Jesus Christ, a foretaste of the book of Revelations.
These times Daniel anticipates will be times of great human and natural destruction, but we will have to choose, both good and evil will be clearly presented to us:
"At that time Michael, the great prince who protects your people, will arise. There will be a time of distress such as has not happened from the beginning of nations until then. But at that time your people—everyone whose name is found written in the book—will be delivered" Daniel 12:1.
And after these times an era of lasting peace will arise, and there will be a retribution for the righteous and another for the sinners: "And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever." Daniel 12:2-3.
The prophecies of Daniel have a great resemblance to more modern prophecies such as those of Saint Malachy, Nostradamus, and Fatima.
