The chicken or the egg? Well, it was the egg that actually came first. Understand that chicken was not the first bird to walk or fly the earth, so the other first born birds on earth started to have a lot of genetical mutation leading to many classes and breeds of birds.

So chicken was one of the breed mutated from other birds. The result of mutation was reflected in the offspring of the birds that went under genetical mutation, so the egg laid by this bird resulted in a new breed and that was the chicken.
