🌳🌳🌳TreeTuesday - Symbol of the city🌳🌳🌳
Happy TreeTuesday!!!
Today I will share with you something about the symbol tree of Iasi, the city I live in. This is a silver linden tree (Tilia tomentosa), approximately 540 years old. It is located in the most important park of the city, Copou. This tree is huge, the biggest tree in the area.
This beautiful tree is known to the locals, and not only, as "Eminescu's linden tree". Mihai Eminescu is our national poet and he loved this tree, often being seen around it. The poet died in 1889...the tree is still around....

An interesting fact about this tree is the fact that the trunk is nothing but an empty shell. Due to a terrible disease, known as "linden cancer", the tree started to rot many years ago. However, Mother Nature intervened and, due to an absolutely unique phenomenon - the tree grew adventitious roots on the upper branches.
Human help was required though, the trunk and its branches needed support therefore metallic belts were installed.
The specialists who are watching over the tree assured us that, with a little luck, we will enjoy its beauty for another 50, maybe 100 years.

Yes, and the age was scientifically determined. I remember I was in school when they did it. A very interesting process. They cut a slice from the trunk using a special cutter (Pressler, if I'm not mistaken) so they wouldn't damage the tree.

Wow, what an amazing story! The tree outlived the poet and also disease. So nice to see the community helping it to overcome and live on.
This tree is the symbol of the city and it was always protected by the citizens. During the WWII, the park was transformed into a concentration camp and the Russian army were targeting the tree (for fire). Some Romanian college teachers surrounded the tree and refused to leave. They saved the tree as the Russian soldiers were impressed by their strong will.
There is also a suggestion for when the tree will die (hopefully not too soon): placing a glass cupola over it so everybody could remember it.
We do love trees. 🙂
Wow! The students surrounded it! This tree needs to have a whole book written about it 🙌👏😊
