Trees for Africa

in #treetuesday6 years ago (edited)

Dune Sweet Thorn (Mimosaceae) Vachellia kosiensis, Duinesoetdoring in Afrikaans.

A quick growing tree obtaining height of 10 to 17 m, attracts many birds, bees and other insects including bushbabies if you in the right region.

Gum from damaged bark is enjoyed by Vervet and Samango Monkeys on day shift, along with nocturnal Bushbabies or lesser bushbaby known as a Galago.

These trees get lovely yellow ball flowers gently sharing a soft perfume into the air, bright green leaves between thorny branches for protection when young. Trees are spread in sickle shaped pods that turn from green to a reddish brown when mature, floating out in the wind to plant itself further afield.

This tree is used to close gaps when clearing our coastal areas of trees not indigenous to the region, used in over grazed areas being fast growing, closing the gap.

Effectively used around your boundary to help ward off marauders, both human and browsing, thorns are very effective barriers.
