Tree Tuesday - Spirit Trees...!!
In Thailand walking along the streets in a park or visiting a Temple you will always see big huge trees wrapped with colorful strips around there trunk the reason for this Thai people believe that spirits live in the trees.
It's usually said by the Thai people that the bigger and older the tree is that's where the spirits are so Thai people mark these trees with color fabrics.
It is a custom that Thai people will leave offerings of food, drinks or ornaments of powerful Gods at the base of the tree around the roots or lower branches in order to keep the spirits in good peaceful moods.
Thai people believe different kinds of spirits live in different types of trees. Another interesting fact they say Buddhist Monks wrap orange fabric around trees in the forest to save them from been cut down as it would be fatal for someone to cut it down.
And it did work by the Buddhist Monks wrapping this orange fabric around these beautiful old trees they became sacred to every Buddhist, so they couldn't harm these beautiful trees of nature and spirit.

Interesting. Specially the wrapping of red cloths. Banyan trees are beautiful and magical I think with their roots shooting down which often associates them with supernatural beings in Filipino belief. 🙂
This is so true i love those sorts of trees they do resemble live beings interesting to know Filipino's beliefs on this amazing tree so cool :)
What a lovely post! I so enjoyed visiting Thailand and love trees. That the Thai people believe that spirits live in trees is enchanting and I remember when I visited I bought three little birds in a triangular basket from a very puzzled lady. I had no idea that I was supposed to open the cage and allow them to fly free. I would have loved to have done that. I handed the cage back and apologised and gave her money, for which she was grateful, but how silly of me not to have done my homework. However It would have been unlikely that I would have heard about beliefs or myths in such details. Now I know!. Thanks for reminding me.
Thank you i have been here for awhile now and still everyday you will see or learn something new as they say amazing Thailand :)
Well next time your here you will open the cage door let them free and wish for the best dream..lol
This is a nice story and photos too. Especially interesting (and new) to me was that part about Buddhist Monks wrapping the trees in the forest with orange fabric to protect them from cutting down as well as to protect that someone who might cut them down from something fatal.
Thank you it is amazing how different cultures believe in different life forms but that is the amazing interest in cultures be boring if we were all the same :)
It is amazing how believing that ones ancestors/spirits live within the trust changes their entire attitude about nature. I wish we had more of that in our culture. Literally from the bottom of your hearts you respect the world around you. Thank you for sharing :)
It is truly amazing everyone believes in something and they really respect there thoughts and feeling about this magical superstitions that have been passed down through generations :)
Yeah, understanding the myths behind our societies is quite important. Even if we don't believe in them :)
What a really interesting story. It makes me want to visit Thailand. Maybe I will.
Thank you ...there are many interesting things to see and discover here you wouldn't be disappointed :)))
