Tree Tuesday: Erythrina lysistemon - Coral tree/Lucky bean tree or Koraalboom/ Kanniedood (in Afrikaans)
The Coral Tree is a deciduous tree with stunning orange flowers which blooms just before the leaves start coming out by the end of winter beginning of spring. It creates quite a beautiful picture in the garden against the clear blue winter skies.
The tree is native to South Africa and can reach a height of about 15m. The bark is smooth with a few little hooks on the trunk. The leaves are trifoliate and for 4-5 months per year, the tree has no leaves. The flowers form a cluster and each petal looks like cockscombs.
The Coral tree is fast growing with low maintenance and a large aggressive root system. It needs fertile and well-drained soil. They prefer warmer temperatures and dry winters.
In the Zulu culture this tree is considered a royal tree and planted on the “Chiefs” graves, they use it when flowering as a signal when to plant crops and it is also used in treatment for thrombosis as it helps prevent blood clotting.
