Where else, if not to the PEARL OF AFRICA?

Introduction

“For magnificence, for variety of form and color, for profusion of brilliant life — bird, insect, reptile, beast — for vast scale — Uganda is truly “the Pearl of Africa.”

Those were the words of Winston Churchill, writing about his trip to Uganda, in his 1907 book, titled: My African Journey.

The then 33 year old, who would another 33 years later, become Britain’s Prime Minister, came, saw, and named Uganda: The pearl of Africa.

No better words have ever been spoken in praise of nation.

Suffice to say that in this testament, if for poverty of word and skill, I should fall short of a convincing argument in favor of this small East African Nation, you should look up this book.

Because at every rate, I am adamant, that for someone who has been cooped up in the same city for too long, and who desires to see something new and exciting, Uganda is the go-to destination.

I don’t know about your other travels, but I am certain that for somebody who has been cooped up in Canada, and indeed, in any part of the world, Uganda offers everything new and exciting.

1. I recommend a unique water experience

a) Source of the Nile

For one, the source of the Worlds longest river, namely, the River Nile, is found in Uganda. If the chance to experience this, not just for someone who has been cooped up in Canada, but in any part of the world for that matter, is not something exciting and new, then I don’t know what else is;

b) Worlds Largest Tropical Lake

In Uganda is also found the world’s largest tropical lake, namely, lake Victoria, also the world’s second largest fresh water lake by surface area, after North America's Lake Superior.
After being cooped up in Canada all this while, the experience of this lake is certainly new and exciting.

2. Wild Life of fauna and flora to excite you

Uganda has some of the world's most varied wild life, however these are what should quickly catch your attention.

a) The Mountain Gorilla

Uganda is one of the only three (3) countries, including Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, where you will find the rare Mountain Gorilla. Indeed, more than half of the world’s mountain Gorilla population is found in Uganda.

a) The Crested Crane

This is Uganda's national bird, another rare species your eyes should not miss when in Uganda.

The experience of seeing these primates is therefore not a kind any country can offer, but Uganda does, and it is certainly something new and exciting, not just for someone who has been cooped up in Canada, but in any part of the world for that matter.

3. People and Places

The Kingdom of Uganda is a fairy tale. The scenery is different, the climate is different and most of all, the people are different from anything elsewhere to be seen in the whole range of Africa….
a) Uganda Martyrs Shrine

Are you religious, may be Catholic, Anglican? Overall, are you Christian, then again you wouldn't want to miss the Uganda martyrs sites, particularly Uganda martyrs shrine Namugongo.

This is the site where, 32 young men, of the Anglican and catholic faiths, were burned to death on June 3, 1886, following their refusal to renounce Christianity.

It is one of the most popular historical sight to which every one a year, people from all over the country come to celebrate the one sacrifice that formed the foundation of the christian faith in Uganda.

There is so much about Uganda, It is like an idyllic station. Winston Churchill, could not have been more correct in naming her "The Pearl of Africa"

Churchill's 1907 book: My Africa Travels is a good read. It is still as relevant today as it was back then.

Cheers @kpine, and Welcome to Uganda

Uganda is from end to end a ‘beautiful garden’ where ‘staple food’ of the people grows almost without labour. Does it not sound like a paradise on earth? It is the Pearl of Africa.” - Winston Churchill
