Thaipusam in Singapore - Not for the Faint Hearted - TravelPhotography
Up to 40,000 tourists and locals came down to witness the Thaipusam precession today in Singapore.
If you haven’t seen it before, it’s not for people who are squirmish about things that look painful/gory.
I won’t claim to know much about this festival, I think this image is of a kavadi bearer with lots of hooks in his skin. Kavadi means ‘burden’.
The annual Tamil festival falls on the full moon day of the Tamil month of Thai. It is celebrated in honour of Lord Subramaniam, also known as Lord Murugan, who represents virtue, youth and power, and is the destroyer of evil. Devotees seek blessings and fulfil their vows by carrying milk pots as offerings or Kavadis.

This is one of the biggest festival for our Tamil community here in Singapore, as well as many parts of the world.

Thanks. I saw this on the way to the MRT however didn't have time to go to Little India. Due to the blood moon yesterday the festival was cut short. I'll have to wait till next year to see the whole thing :)
