Tower of Skulls in Nis

in #travelp5 years ago (edited)

Serbian history is full of dramatic events related to the Ottoman yoke. One of them is immortalized, and, by the Turks themselves, in the form of a tower of skulls. It is called Chele Kula and is a historical and cultural monument of particular importance - protected by the state.

It sells tickets and souvenirs

Chela Kula is located in Niche in Dusan Popovich Street. Find it easy. Tickets can be bought here in this house - the price is extremely low. We bought a comprehensive ticket for three people to visit three sites and paid only 570 dinars. So, the entrance to the Chele Kula tower will cost extremely little - I'm sure. They paid in dinars, by the way. The fact is that Serbia has its own currency - dinars. In general, in Nis all museums are very accessible and they do not prohibit photographing there. And everywhere young ministers are true, they speak only English mostly.

The Chele Kula tower was built by the orders of Ahmed Pasha from the skulls of the Serbs, and their scalps were filled with straw and sent to Istanbul. These skulls were 952. Ask where they got them? They collected them at the site of the explosion during the Battle of Mount Chegar in 1809. Serb rebels, defeated, decided to explode along with the Turks around them. This decision was made by Stefan Singelic. His head Turks hoisted to the top of the tower.

In 1892, a chapel was built around the tower in order to preserve the tower as a scary monument of Ottoman atrocities. Inside the chapel the walls of the tower are fenced with glass.

Now in the tower there are only about 58 skulls left - the others were pulled out by relatives and just onlookers.

The tower itself was about 5 meters high, it gradually collapsed and an unprepared tourist, going inside the chapel, did not even immediately realize that this tower - there is too little space inside to look at this object from the side.

In the photo above, the skull of the commander of the Serbian detachment, Stefan Singelic.

Inspection of this attraction does not take a lot of time and, in principle, it is not terrible. We met here Serbs with small children and no one cried from fear.

In Nis, you can still see the Nazi camp, the Turkish fortress, several monasteries, excavations of the Roman city of Median - in general, there is something to see. Therefore, I recommend to buy a general ticket for the inspection of all the attractions, it is not worth the date and you can leisurely go to museums at your convenience.

All the photos were taken by me personally in one Sofia autumn.

Thank you for your time and attention.
