প্রায় ছয় হাজার বর্গ কিলোমিটারেরও বেশি আয়তনের বাংলাদেশ সুন্দরবনের। দেশের দক্ষিণ পশ্চিমাঞ্চলের বিশাল উপকূলীয় এলাকাজুড়ে সুন্দরবনের অবস্থান। ‘পূর্ব’ ও ‘পশ্চিম’ দুটি বিভাগের অধীনে চারটি প্রশাসনিক রেঞ্জে ভাগ করা হয়েছে সুন্দরবনকে। রেঞ্জগুলো হলো চাঁদপাই, শরণখোলা, খুলনা ও সাতক্ষীরা। ১৯৯৭ সালে সুন্দরবন ইউনেস্কো ঘোষিত বিশ্ব ঐতিহ্যের তালিকায় স্থান পায়। ৭৯৮তম বিশ্ব ঐতিহ্য এটি। সুন্দরবনের প্রধান প্রাণী রয়েল বেঙ্গল টাইগার আর চিত্রা হরিণ। এছাড়া মায়া হরিণ, বন্য শুকর, বানর, গুঁই শাপ, ভোদর, ডলফিন, নোনাপানির কুমির, কিং কোবরা, অজগর ইত্যাদি নানান বন্যপ্রাণীর বসবাস আছে সুন্দরবনে।সুন্দরবনে প্রায় ৩৩০ প্রজাতির গাছপালা রয়েছে। এরমধ্যে উল্লেখযোগ্য হলো সুন্দরী, কেওড়া, পশুর, ধুন্দল, আমুর, গরান, গর্জন, খোলশী, বলা, হেতাল, গোলপাতা, টাইগার ফার্ন, হারগোজা ইত্যাদি।
স্থানীয় ও পরিযায়ী মিলে সুন্দরবনে প্রায় ২৭০ প্রজাতির পাখির দেখা মেলে। এরমধ্যে বড় সাদা বক, সি ঈগল, বাজ, মাস্ক ফিঙ্কফুট, বিভিন্ন প্রজাতির মাছরাঙ্গা, ফিঙ্গে, সুঁই চোরা, কাঠঠোকরা, বন মোরগ উল্লেখযোগ্য। এছাড়া প্রায় চারশ রকম মাছ পাওয়া যায় সুন্দরবন এলাকায়। সুন্দরবনের সুন্দরতম একটি জায়গা কটকা খাল। এখানে পর্যটক লঞ্চ নোঙ্গর করে। খালের পশ্চিম পাড়ের জেটি পেরিয়ে উপরে উঠলেই বন কার্যালয়। এর সামনে দিয়ে সোজা পশ্চিমমুখী ইট বাঁধানো পথটি কিছু দূর চলার পরে শেষ। কটকা বন কার্যালয়ের পিছন দিক থেকে সোজা পশ্চিমমুখী কাঠের তৈরি ট্রেইল। এটি কিছু দূর গিয়েই শেষ হয়েছে। এখান থেকে হাতের ডানে জঙ্গল ধরে সামান্য হাঁটলেই টাইগার ডেন, আর বাঁয়ে সামান্য গেলে সমুদ্র। সূর্যাস্ত দেখার জন্য উপযুক্ত জায়গা এটি। কটকার জেটির উত্তরে খালের চরে আকাশ ছোঁয়া দীর্ঘ কেওড়ার বন। এ জায়গাটিতে সবসময়ই দেখা যায় দলে দলে চিত্রা হরিণ, বন্য শুকর, বানর ইত্যাদি।
