Borgund stavkirke oldest wood

in #travelfeed5 years ago

Today I would like to show you some pictures of the unique church.

Borgund stavkirke is located in Borgund, in the municipality of Lærdal, in the district of Sogn og Fjordane in Norway. It is the oldest of its kind (stave pole) building in the world, which has survived to our times intact. It was erected about 1150. It's really a long time.

Stave church, otherwise: "pillar" or "mast" (Norwegian stave church) - the name of a special type of wooden Norwegian churches, erected from the 10th to the 13th century, at a time when the Christian faith was mixed with beliefs in pagan gods Viking. These churches belong to the oldest wooden monuments in Europe.

These are temples with a pole construction (stave), and more precisely - "pole-staves". The core of the structure is a skeleton frame composed of vertical corner poles, then fastened with long planks (staves) that, vertically applied, form the church wall. Churches were built with different techniques, depending on the region and the period of their construction.

The simplest have only one nave and a small presbytery and a roof based on the walls. Churches with the most complex structure have three naves and considerable height. They are covered with a steep roof covered with shingles. The ridge is usually finished with sculptures of dragons.

The whole church is made entirely of wood.
There are no benches, decorations or artificial lighting inside. The light only flows through narrow windows, which were originally circular openings in the walls. The construction is based on twelve supports, which perform a supporting function and determine the main nave of the church

Unfortunately, I could not get inside but from the outside there is a lot to watch.
Awareness that it is almost a thousand years old building - wooden! makes an impression.
Wood, structure, sediment is impressive.

A completely separate story is the door. They have retained their Roman character. They are covered with vine motifs and dragon fights.
